[rv-8-74] • 15 श्लोकाः

विशोविशो वो अतिथिं वाजयन्तः पुरुप्रियम् । अग्निं वो दुर्यं वचः स्तुषे शूषस्य मन्मभिः ॥

viśoviśo vo atithiṃ vājayantaḥ purupriyam | agniṃ vo duryaṃ vacaḥ stuṣe śūṣasya manmabhiḥ ||

Food-desiring (priests, worship) Agni, who is the guest of all mankind, beloved of many; I address tohim in your behalf a domestic homage with hymns, for the attainment of happiness.

यं जनासो हविष्मन्तो मित्रं न सर्पिरासुतिम् । प्रशंसन्ति प्रशस्तिभिः ॥

yaṃ janāso haviṣmanto mitraṃ na sarpirāsutim | praśaṃsanti praśastibhiḥ ||

(That Agni), to whom clarified butter is offered, whom man, bearing oblations, worship with praises as afriend.

पन्यांसं जातवेदसं यो देवतात्युद्यता । हव्यान्यैरयद्दिवि ॥

panyāṃsaṃ jātavedasaṃ yo devatātyudyatā | havyānyairayaddivi ||

Jātavedaqs, the earnest praiser of his worshipper, who sends to heaven the oblations presented inthe sacrifice.

आगन्म वृत्रहन्तमं ज्येष्ठमग्निमानवम् । यस्य श्रुतर्वा बृहन्नार्क्षो अनीक एधते ॥

āganma vṛtrahantamaṃ jyeṣṭhamagnimānavam | yasya śrutarvā bṛhannārkṣo anīka edhate ||

We have come to that most excellent Agni, mightiest destroyer of the wicked, the benefactor of men, inwhose army (O rays) Śruvavān, the mighty son of Ṛkṣa, waxes great.

अमृतं जातवेदसं तिरस्तमांसि दर्शतम् । घृताहवनमीड्यम् ॥

amṛtaṃ jātavedasaṃ tirastamāṃsi darśatam | ghṛtāhavanamīḍyam ||

(We have come) to the immortal Jātavedas, who shows light across the darkness, well worthy ofpraise, and receiving the offering of ghī.

सबाधो यं जना इमेऽग्निं हव्येभिरीऴते । जुह्वानासो यतस्रुचः ॥

sabādho yaṃ janā ime'gniṃ havyebhirīḻate | juhvānāso yatasrucaḥ ||

That Agni, whom these crowding worshippers honour with oblations, offering to him with up-lifted ladles.

इयं ते नव्यसी मतिरग्ने अधाय्यस्मदा । मन्द्र सुजात सुक्रतोऽमूर दस्मातिथे ॥

iyaṃ te navyasī matiragne adhāyyasmadā | mandra sujāta sukrato'mūra dasmātithe ||

This new hymn has been made by us for you, O joyful, well-born Agni, glorious in deeds, unbewildered,beautiful, the guest (of man).

सा ते अग्ने शंतमा चनिष्ठा भवतु प्रिया । तया वर्धस्व सुष्टुतः ॥

sā te agne śaṃtamā caniṣṭhā bhavatu priyā | tayā vardhasva suṣṭutaḥ ||

Agni, may it be dear to you, most plural asant and most agreeable-- well praised by it, to you wax greaṭ

सा द्युम्नैर्द्युम्निनी बृहदुपोप श्रवसि श्रवः । दधीत वृत्रतूर्ये ॥

sā dyumnairdyumninī bṛhadupopa śravasi śravaḥ | dadhīta vṛtratūrye ||

May this (hymn) the rich source of wealth, heap abundance on our abundance (with stores won fromour enemies) in battle.

अश्वमिद्गां रथप्रां त्वेषमिन्द्रं न सत्पतिम् । यस्य श्रवांसि तूर्वथ पन्यम्पन्यं च कृष्टयः ॥

aśvamidgāṃ rathaprāṃ tveṣamindraṃ na satpatim | yasya śravāṃsi tūrvatha panyampanyaṃ ca kṛṣṭayaḥ ||

(Worship), you men, the bright (Agni), who goes like a horse and fills our chariots (with spoil), whoprotects the good like Indra, and by whose might you ravage the stores (of your enemies) and all their wonderful(wealth).

यं त्वा गोपवनो गिरा चनिष्ठदग्ने अङ्गिरः । स पावक श्रुधी हवम् ॥

yaṃ tvā gopavano girā caniṣṭhadagne aṅgiraḥ | sa pāvaka śrudhī havam ||

Agni, Aṅirasa, whom Gopavana by his praise has made the especial giver of food-- O purifier, hear thisprayer.

यं त्वा जनास ईऴते सबाधो वाजसातये । स बोधि वृत्रतूर्ये ॥

yaṃ tvā janāsa īḻate sabādho vājasātaye | sa bodhi vṛtratūrye ||

O you whom the crowding worshippers praise for the obtainment of food, attend to them for thedestruction of their enemiess.

अहं हुवान आर्क्षे श्रुतर्वणि मदच्युति । शर्धांसीव स्तुकाविनां मृक्षा शीर्षा चतुर्णाम् ॥

ahaṃ huvāna ārkṣe śrutarvaṇi madacyuti | śardhāṃsīva stukāvināṃ mṛkṣā śīrṣā caturṇām ||

Summoned before Śrutarvān, the son of Ṛkṣa, the humbler of the pride of his enemies, (I stroke) withmy hand the heads of the four horses (which he has given me), as (men stroke) the long wool of rams.

मां चत्वार आशवः शविष्ठस्य द्रवित्नवः । सुरथासो अभि प्रयो वक्षन्वयो न तुग्र्यम् ॥

māṃ catvāra āśavaḥ śaviṣṭhasya dravitnavaḥ | surathāso abhi prayo vakṣanvayo na tugryam ||

Four swift horses of that most mighty king, yoked to a splendid car, bear me forth to seize thesubstance (of my enemies), as the ships bore home the son of Tugra.

सत्यमित्त्वा महेनदि परुष्ण्यव देदिशम् । नेमापो अश्वदातरः शविष्ठादस्ति मर्त्यः ॥

satyamittvā mahenadi paruṣṇyava dediśam | nemāpo aśvadātaraḥ śaviṣṭhādasti martyaḥ ||

Verily I address you, O great river Paruṣṇi, O waters, there is no mortal who gives horses moreliberally than this most mighty (monarch).
