[rv-8-45] • 42 श्लोकाः

आ घा ये अग्निमिन्धते स्तृणन्ति बर्हिरानुषक् । येषामिन्द्रो युवा सखा ॥

ā ghā ye agnimindhate stṛṇanti barhirānuṣak | yeṣāmindro yuvā sakhā ||

Those (sages) who kindle Agni, those of whom the ever-young Indra is the friend, continually spreadthe sacred grass.

बृहन्निदिध्म एषां भूरि शस्तं पृथुः स्वरुः । येषामिन्द्रो युवा सखा ॥

bṛhannididhma eṣāṃ bhūri śastaṃ pṛthuḥ svaruḥ | yeṣāmindro yuvā sakhā ||

Ample is their fuel, many their hymns, broad their sacred shaving-- whose friend is the ever-youngIndra.

अयुद्ध इद्युधा वृतं शूर आजति सत्वभिः । येषामिन्द्रो युवा सखा ॥

ayuddha idyudhā vṛtaṃ śūra ājati satvabhiḥ | yeṣāmindro yuvā sakhā ||

Though before powerless to combat, the hero by his might now subdues one surrounded by allies, (ifhelped by those) of whom the ever-young Indra is the friend.

आ बुन्दं वृत्रहा ददे जातः पृच्छद्वि मातरम् । क उग्राः के ह शृण्विरे ॥

ā bundaṃ vṛtrahā dade jātaḥ pṛcchadvi mātaram | ka ugrāḥ ke ha śṛṇvire ||

The slayer of Vṛtra, as soon as he was born, seized his arrow, and asked his mother, "who are theterrible, who are renowned?"

प्रति त्वा शवसी वदद्गिरावप्सो न योधिषत् । यस्ते शत्रुत्वमाचके ॥

prati tvā śavasī vadadgirāvapso na yodhiṣat | yaste śatrutvamācake ||

Your strong mother answered you, "he who wishes your enmity fights as the elephant in the mountain".

उत त्वं मघवञ्छृणु यस्ते वष्टि ववक्षि तत् । यद्वीऴयासि वीऴु तत् ॥

uta tvaṃ maghavañchṛṇu yaste vaṣṭi vavakṣi tat | yadvīḻayāsi vīḻu tat ||

O Maghavan, do you hear (our praise); whosoever desires of you, you bear to him his request, whatyou fix is sure.

यदाजिं यात्याजिकृदिन्द्रः स्वश्वयुरुप । रथीतमो रथीनाम् ॥

yadājiṃ yātyājikṛdindraḥ svaśvayurupa | rathītamo rathīnām ||

When Indra, the warrior, goes to battle, desirous of gallant steeds, he is the foremost of the lords ofchariots.

वि षु विश्वा अभियुजो वज्रिन्विष्वग्यथा वृह । भवा नः सुश्रवस्तमः ॥

vi ṣu viśvā abhiyujo vajrinviṣvagyathā vṛha | bhavā naḥ suśravastamaḥ ||

Thunderer, smite all your enemies that you may be scattered-- be to us a most abundant benefactor.

अस्माकं सु रथं पुर इन्द्रः कृणोतु सातये । न यं धूर्वन्ति धूर्तयः ॥

asmākaṃ su rathaṃ pura indraḥ kṛṇotu sātaye | na yaṃ dhūrvanti dhūrtayaḥ ||

May Indra, whom no foes can harm, send before us a beautiful chariot for the acquisition (of ourdesires).

वृज्याम ते परि द्विषोऽरं ते शक्र दावने । गमेमेदिन्द्र गोमतः ॥

vṛjyāma te pari dviṣo'raṃ te śakra dāvane | gamemedindra gomataḥ ||

Surround Indra, may we escape your enemies; may we come to you abundantly for your gifts, rich incattle.

शनैश्चिद्यन्तो अद्रिवोऽश्वावन्तः शतग्विनः । विवक्षणा अनेहसः ॥

śanaiścidyanto adrivo'śvāvantaḥ śatagvinaḥ | vivakṣaṇā anehasaḥ ||

(May we come), thunderer, slowly approaching you-- may we be rich in horses, possessed of abundanttreasure, ready to offer, and unharmed (by calamity).

ऊर्ध्वा हि ते दिवेदिवे सहस्रा सूनृता शता । जरितृभ्यो विमंहते ॥

ūrdhvā hi te divedive sahasrā sūnṛtā śatā | jaritṛbhyo vimaṃhate ||

(The sacrificer) gives to your praisers day by day hundreds and thousands of excellent and auspiciousgifts.

विद्मा हि त्वा धनंजयमिन्द्र दृऴ्हा चिदारुजम् । आदारिणं यथा गयम् ॥

vidmā hi tvā dhanaṃjayamindra dṛḻhā cidārujam | ādāriṇaṃ yathā gayam ||

We know you, Indra, as the conqueror of wealth, the breaker of firm obstacles, the opener, and(guarding from harm) as a house.

ककुहं चित्त्वा कवे मन्दन्तु धृष्णविन्दवः । आ त्वा पणिं यदीमहे ॥

kakuhaṃ cittvā kave mandantu dhṛṣṇavindavaḥ | ā tvā paṇiṃ yadīmahe ||

Wise (Indra) overcomer of enemies, when we solicit you the barterer, may the drops of the Somaexhilarate you the exalted one.

यस्ते रेवाँ अदाशुरिः प्रममर्ष मघत्तये । तस्य नो वेद आ भर ॥

yaste revā~ adāśuriḥ pramamarṣa maghattaye | tasya no veda ā bhara ||

Grant to us the possessions of that rich man who, through his niggardliness, reviles you as to yourbestowal of wealth.

इम उ त्वा वि चक्षते सखाय इन्द्र सोमिनः । पुष्टावन्तो यथा पशुम् ॥

ima u tvā vi cakṣate sakhāya indra sominaḥ | puṣṭāvanto yathā paśum ||

These friends, effusing the Soma, look on you, Indra, as men with their fodder ready (look) on theircattle.

उत त्वाबधिरं वयं श्रुत्कर्णं सन्तमूतये । दूरादिह हवामहे ॥

uta tvābadhiraṃ vayaṃ śrutkarṇaṃ santamūtaye | dūrādiha havāmahe ||

We invoke you here from afar for our protection, who are never deaf, and whose ears are always opento hear.

यच्छुश्रूया इमं हवं दुर्मर्षं चक्रिया उत । भवेरापिर्नो अन्तमः ॥

yacchuśrūyā imaṃ havaṃ durmarṣaṃ cakriyā uta | bhaverāpirno antamaḥ ||

If you hear this our prayer, then display your invincible power and be our nearest kinsman.

यच्चिद्धि ते अपि व्यथिर्जगन्वांसो अमन्महि । गोदा इदिन्द्र बोधि नः ॥

yacciddhi te api vyathirjaganvāṃso amanmahi | godā idindra bodhi naḥ ||

Whenever, repairing to you in our distress, we offer our praises, attend to us, Indra, as a giver of cattle.

आ त्वा रम्भं न जिव्रयो ररभ्मा शवसस्पते । उश्मसि त्वा सधस्थ आ ॥

ā tvā rambhaṃ na jivrayo rarabhmā śavasaspate | uśmasi tvā sadhastha ā ||

Lord of might, we lean on you as the aged on a staff; we long for you in the sacrifice.

स्तोत्रमिन्द्राय गायत पुरुनृम्णाय सत्वने । नकिर्यं वृण्वते युधि ॥

stotramindrāya gāyata purunṛmṇāya satvane | nakiryaṃ vṛṇvate yudhi ||

Sing the praise to Indra, who is rich in wealth and bountiful, whom none can slay in battle.

अभि त्वा वृषभा सुते सुतं सृजामि पीतये । तृम्पा व्यश्नुही मदम् ॥

abhi tvā vṛṣabhā sute sutaṃ sṛjāmi pītaye | tṛmpā vyaśnuhī madam ||

When the Soma is effused, I pour the libation to you, showerer (of blessings), for your drinking; satiateyourself, enjoy the exhilarating draught.

मा त्वा मूरा अविष्यवो मोपहस्वान आ दभन् । माकीं ब्रह्मद्विषो वनः ॥

mā tvā mūrā aviṣyavo mopahasvāna ā dabhan | mākīṃ brahmadviṣo vanaḥ ||

Let not fools, seeking protection, nor mockers trouble you; favour not the enemies of the brāhmaṇaṣ

इह त्वा गोपरीणसा महे मन्दन्तु राधसे । सरो गौरो यथा पिब ॥

iha tvā goparīṇasā mahe mandantu rādhase | saro gauro yathā piba ||

Let (the worships) gladden you here with the Soma mixed with milk, for the attainment of great wealth;drink it as the buffalo a lake.

या वृत्रहा परावति सना नवा च चुच्युवे । ता संसत्सु प्र वोचत ॥

yā vṛtrahā parāvati sanā navā ca cucyuve | tā saṃsatsu pra vocata ||

Proclaim in our assemblies those perpetual and ever new riches which the slayer of Vṛtra sends fromafar.

अपिबत्कद्रुवः सुतमिन्द्रः सहस्रबाह्वे । अत्रादेदिष्ट पौंस्यम् ॥

apibatkadruvaḥ sutamindraḥ sahasrabāhve | atrādediṣṭa pauṃsyam ||

Indra drank the Soma offering of Kadru, (he smote the enemies) of the thousand-armed; there did hismight shine forth.

सत्यं तत्तुर्वशे यदौ विदानो अह्नवाय्यम् । व्यानट् तुर्वणे शमि ॥

satyaṃ tatturvaśe yadau vidāno ahnavāyyam | vyānaṭ turvaṇe śami ||

Well-knowing those (sacrificial) deeds of Turvaśa and Yadu, he overcame Anhavāyya in battle.

तरणिं वो जनानां त्रदं वाजस्य गोमतः । समानमु प्र शंसिषम् ॥

taraṇiṃ vo janānāṃ tradaṃ vājasya gomataḥ | samānamu pra śaṃsiṣam ||

I praise our common (Indra), the deliverer of your families, the slayer (of your enemies, the bestower) ofriches in cattle.

ऋभुक्षणं न वर्तव उक्थेषु तुग्र्यावृधम् । इन्द्रं सोमे सचा सुते ॥

ṛbhukṣaṇaṃ na vartava uktheṣu tugryāvṛdham | indraṃ some sacā sute ||

(I praise) in hymns the mighty Indra, the augmenter of waters, for the attainment of wealth, when theSoma is effused with (song).

यः कृन्तदिद्वि योन्यं त्रिशोकाय गिरिं पृथुम् । गोभ्यो गातुं निरेतवे ॥

yaḥ kṛntadidvi yonyaṃ triśokāya giriṃ pṛthum | gobhyo gātuṃ niretave ||

(Indra), who clove for Triśoka the broad womb-like cloud, (and made) a path for the cows to issueforth?

यद्दधिषे मनस्यसि मन्दानः प्रेदियक्षसि । मा तत्करिन्द्र मृऴय ॥

yaddadhiṣe manasyasi mandānaḥ prediyakṣasi | mā tatkarindra mṛḻaya ||

Whatever you undertake in your exhilaration, whatever you purpose in your mind or are thinking tobestow-- O Indra, do it not, but bless us.

दभ्रं चिद्धि त्वावतः कृतं शृण्वे अधि क्षमि । जिगात्विन्द्र ते मनः ॥

dabhraṃ ciddhi tvāvataḥ kṛtaṃ śṛṇve adhi kṣami | jigātvindra te manaḥ ||

Indra, the least deeds of one like you are renowned in the earth; may your care visit me.

तवेदु ताः सुकीर्तयोऽसन्नुत प्रशस्तयः । यदिन्द्र मृऴयासि नः ॥

tavedu tāḥ sukīrtayo'sannuta praśastayaḥ | yadindra mṛḻayāsi naḥ ||

Yours be those ascriptions of praise, your those hymns, through which, Indra, you bless us.

मा न एकस्मिन्नागसि मा द्वयोरुत त्रिषु । वधीर्मा शूर भूरिषु ॥

mā na ekasminnāgasi mā dvayoruta triṣu | vadhīrmā śūra bhūriṣu ||

Slay us not for one sin, not for two, not for three; O hero, slay us not for many.

बिभया हि त्वावत उग्रादभिप्रभङ्गिणः । दस्मादहमृतीषहः ॥

bibhayā hi tvāvata ugrādabhiprabhaṅgiṇaḥ | dasmādahamṛtīṣahaḥ ||

I am afraid of one like you, terrible, the smiter of enemies, the destroyer, who endures hostie attacks.

मा सख्युः शूनमा विदे मा पुत्रस्य प्रभूवसो । आवृत्वद्भूतु ते मनः ॥

mā sakhyuḥ śūnamā vide mā putrasya prabhūvaso | āvṛtvadbhūtu te manaḥ ||

Wealthy (Indra), may I never have to tell you of the destitutuion of my friend or my son; may your mindbe favourable towards me.

को नु मर्या अमिथितः सखा सखायमब्रवीत् । जहा को अस्मदीषते ॥

ko nu maryā amithitaḥ sakhā sakhāyamabravīt | jahā ko asmadīṣate ||

"Who, O mortals", said (Indra), "unprovoked, has ever, as a friend, slain his friend? Who fleeth fromme?"

एवारे वृषभा सुतेऽसिन्वन्भूर्यावयः । श्वघ्नीव निवता चरन् ॥

evāre vṛṣabhā sute'sinvanbhūryāvayaḥ | śvaghnīva nivatā caran ||

Showerer (of benefits), when the ready Soma was effused, you did devour much, without stint, rushingdown like a gameste.

आ त एता वचोयुजा हरी गृभ्णे सुमद्रथा । यदीं ब्रह्मभ्य इद्ददः ॥

ā ta etā vacoyujā harī gṛbhṇe sumadrathā | yadīṃ brahmabhya iddadaḥ ||

I draw here your two steeds, harnessed to a beauiful chariot and yoked by hymns, since you givewealth to the brāhmaṇas.

भिन्धि विश्वा अप द्विषः परि बाधो जही मृधः । वसु स्पार्हं तदा भर ॥

bhindhi viśvā apa dviṣaḥ pari bādho jahī mṛdhaḥ | vasu spārhaṃ tadā bhara ||

Cleave asunder all the hostile hosts, frustrate their destructive attacks, and bestow on us their desirablewealth.

यद्वीऴाविन्द्र यत्स्थिरे यत्पर्शाने पराभृतम् । वसु स्पार्हं तदा भर ॥

yadvīḻāvindra yatsthire yatparśāne parābhṛtam | vasu spārhaṃ tadā bhara ||

Bestow on us, Indra, that desirable wealth, which is deosited in strongholds, in fastnesses, and inplaces which can stand an attack.

यस्य ते विश्वमानुषो भूरेर्दत्तस्य वेदति । वसु स्पार्हं तदा भर ॥

yasya te viśvamānuṣo bhūrerdattasya vedati | vasu spārhaṃ tadā bhara ||

Bestow on us, Indra, that desirable wealth which all men recognize as given abundantly by you.
