[rv-6-75] • 19 श्लोकाः

जीमूतस्येव भवति प्रतीकं यद्वर्मी याति समदामुपस्थे । अनाविद्धया तन्वा जय त्वं स त्वा वर्मणो महिमा पिपर्तु ॥

jīmūtasyeva bhavati pratīkaṃ yadvarmī yāti samadāmupasthe | anāviddhayā tanvā jaya tvaṃ sa tvā varmaṇo mahimā pipartu ||

When the mailed warrior advances in the front of battles, his form is like that of a cloud; with his body unwounded do you conquer; may the strength of the armous defend us.

धन्वना गा धन्वनाजिं जयेम धन्वना तीव्राः समदो जयेम । धनुः शत्रोरपकामं कृणोति धन्वना सर्वाः प्रदिशो जयेम ॥

dhanvanā gā dhanvanājiṃ jayema dhanvanā tīvrāḥ samado jayema | dhanuḥ śatrorapakāmaṃ kṛṇoti dhanvanā sarvāḥ pradiśo jayema ||

May we conquer the cattle (of the enemies) with the bow; with the bow may we be victorious in battle may we overcome our fierce-exulting (enemies) with the bow; may the bow disappoint the hope of the foe; may we subdue with the bow all (hostile) countries.

वक्ष्यन्तीवेदा गनीगन्ति कर्णं प्रियं सखायं परिषस्वजाना । योषेव शिङ्क्ते वितताधि धन्वञ्ज्या इयं समने पारयन्ती ॥

vakṣyantīvedā ganīganti karṇaṃ priyaṃ sakhāyaṃ pariṣasvajānā | yoṣeva śiṅkte vitatādhi dhanvañjyā iyaṃ samane pārayantī ||

This bowstring, drawn tight upon the bow, and making way in battle, repeatedly approaches the ear (of the warrior), as if embracing its friend (the arrow), and proposing to say something agreeable, as a woman whispers (to her husband).

ते आचरन्ती समनेव योषा मातेव पुत्रं बिभृतामुपस्थे । अप शत्रून्विध्यतां संविदाने आर्त्नी इमे विष्फुरन्ती अमित्रान् ॥

te ācarantī samaneva yoṣā māteva putraṃ bibhṛtāmupasthe | apa śatrūnvidhyatāṃ saṃvidāne ārtnī ime viṣphurantī amitrān ||

May the two extremities of the bow, acting in concert, like a wife sympathizing (with her husband), uphold (the warrior), as a mother nurses her child upon her lap; and may they, moving concurrently, and harassing the foe, scatter his enemies.

बह्वीनां पिता बहुरस्य पुत्रश्चिश्चा कृणोति समनावगत्य । इषुधिः सङ्काः पृतनाश्च सर्वाः पृष्ठे निनद्धो जयति प्रसूतः ॥

bahvīnāṃ pitā bahurasya putraściścā kṛṇoti samanāvagatya | iṣudhiḥ saṅkāḥ pṛtanāśca sarvāḥ pṛṣṭhe ninaddho jayati prasūtaḥ ||

The quiver, the parent of many, of whom many are the sons, clangs as it enters into the battle; slung at the back (of the warrior), prolific (of its shafts), it overcomes all shouting hosts.

रथे तिष्ठन्नयति वाजिनः पुरो यत्रयत्र कामयते सुषारथिः । अभीशूनां महिमानं पनायत मनः पश्चादनु यच्छन्ति रश्मयः ॥

rathe tiṣṭhannayati vājinaḥ puro yatrayatra kāmayate suṣārathiḥ | abhīśūnāṃ mahimānaṃ panāyata manaḥ paścādanu yacchanti raśmayaḥ ||

The skilful charioteer, standing in the car, derives his horses before him whatsoever he will; praise the efficacy of the reins, for the reins from the back (of the car compel the steeds) to follow the intention (of the driver).

तीव्रान्घोषान्कृण्वते वृषपाणयोऽश्वा रथेभिः सह वाजयन्तः । अवक्रामन्तः प्रपदैरमित्रान्क्षिणन्ति शत्रूँरनपव्ययन्तः ॥

tīvrānghoṣānkṛṇvate vṛṣapāṇayo'śvā rathebhiḥ saha vājayantaḥ | avakrāmantaḥ prapadairamitrānkṣiṇanti śatrū~ranapavyayantaḥ ||

The horses raising the dust with their hoofs, rushing on with the chariots, utter loud neighings, retreating not (from the charge), but trampling with their fore feet upon the enemies, they destroy them.

रथवाहनं हविरस्य नाम यत्रायुधं निहितमस्य वर्म । तत्रा रथमुप शग्मं सदेम विश्वाहा वयं सुमनस्यमानाः ॥

rathavāhanaṃ havirasya nāma yatrāyudhaṃ nihitamasya varma | tatrā rathamupa śagmaṃ sadema viśvāhā vayaṃ sumanasyamānāḥ ||

The spoil borne off in his car, in which his weapons and armour are deposited, is the appropriate oblation of the warrior; therefore let us, exulting, daily do honour to the joy-bestowing car.

स्वादुषंसदः पितरो वयोधाः कृच्छ्रेश्रितः शक्तीवन्तो गभीराः । चित्रसेना इषुबला अमृध्राः सतोवीरा उरवो व्रातसाहाः ॥

svāduṣaṃsadaḥ pitaro vayodhāḥ kṛcchreśritaḥ śaktīvanto gabhīrāḥ | citrasenā iṣubalā amṛdhrāḥ satovīrā uravo vrātasāhāḥ ||

The guards (of chariot), revelling in the savoury (spoil), distributors of food, protecors in calamity, armed with spears, resolute, beautifully arranged, strong in arrows, invincible, of heroic valour, robust, and conquerors of numerous hosts.

ब्राह्मणासः पितरः सोम्यासः शिवे नो द्यावापृथिवी अनेहसा । पूषा नः पातु दुरितादृतावृधो रक्षा माकिर्नो अघशंस ईशत ॥

brāhmaṇāsaḥ pitaraḥ somyāsaḥ śive no dyāvāpṛthivī anehasā | pūṣā naḥ pātu duritādṛtāvṛdho rakṣā mākirno aghaśaṃsa īśata ||

May the brāhmaṇas, the progenitors presenters of the Soma, the observers of truth, protect us; may the faultless heaven and earth be propitious to us; may Pūṣan preserve us from misfortune, let no calumniator prevail over us.

सुपर्णं वस्ते मृगो अस्या दन्तो गोभिः संनद्धा पतति प्रसूता । यत्रा नरः सं च वि च द्रवन्ति तत्रास्मभ्यमिषवः शर्म यंसन् ॥

suparṇaṃ vaste mṛgo asyā danto gobhiḥ saṃnaddhā patati prasūtā | yatrā naraḥ saṃ ca vi ca dravanti tatrāsmabhyamiṣavaḥ śarma yaṃsan ||

The arrow puts on a (feathery) wing; the (horn of the) deer is its point; it is bound with the sinews of the cow; it alights where directed; whenever men assemble or disperse, there may the shafts fall for an advantage.

ऋजीते परि वृङ्धि नोऽश्मा भवतु नस्तनूः । सोमो अधि ब्रवीतु नोऽदितिः शर्म यच्छतु ॥

ṛjīte pari vṛṅdhi no'śmā bhavatu nastanūḥ | somo adhi bravītu no'ditiḥ śarma yacchatu ||

Straight-flying (arrow), defend us; may our bodies be stone; may Soma speak to us encouragement; may Aditi grant us success.

आ जङ्घन्ति सान्वेषां जघनाँ उप जिघ्नते । अश्वाजनि प्रचेतसोऽश्वान्त्समत्सु चोदय ॥

ā jaṅghanti sānveṣāṃ jaghanā~ upa jighnate | aśvājani pracetaso'śvāntsamatsu codaya ||

Whip, with which the skilful (charioteers) last their thighs and scourge their flanks, urge the horses in battles.

अहिरिव भोगैः पर्येति बाहुं ज्याया हेतिं परिबाधमानः । हस्तघ्नो विश्वा वयुनानि विद्वान्पुमान्पुमांसं परि पातु विश्वतः ॥

ahiriva bhogaiḥ paryeti bāhuṃ jyāyā hetiṃ paribādhamānaḥ | hastaghno viśvā vayunāni vidvānpumānpumāṃsaṃ pari pātu viśvataḥ ||

The ward of the fore-arm protecting it from the abrasion of the bow-string, surrounds the arm like a snake with its convulutions; may the brave man, experienced in the arts of war, defend a combatant on every side.

आलाक्ता या रुरुशीर्ष्ण्यथो यस्या अयो मुखम् । इदं पर्जन्यरेतस इष्वै देव्यै बृहन्नमः ॥

ālāktā yā ruruśīrṣṇyatho yasyā ayo mukham | idaṃ parjanyaretasa iṣvai devyai bṛhannamaḥ ||

This praise (be offered) to the large celestial arrow, the growth of Parjanya, whose point is anointed with venom, whose blade is iron.

अवसृष्टा परा पत शरव्ये ब्रह्मसंशिते । गच्छामित्रान्प्र पद्यस्व मामीषां कं चनोच्छिषः ॥

avasṛṣṭā parā pata śaravye brahmasaṃśite | gacchāmitrānpra padyasva māmīṣāṃ kaṃ canocchiṣaḥ ||

Arrow, wheted by charms, fly when discharged; go light among the adversaries, spare not one of the enemy.

यत्र बाणाः सम्पतन्ति कुमारा विशिखा इव । तत्रा नो ब्रह्मणस्पतिरदितिः शर्म यच्छतु विश्वाहा शर्म यच्छतु ॥

yatra bāṇāḥ sampatanti kumārā viśikhā iva | tatrā no brahmaṇaspatiraditiḥ śarma yacchatu viśvāhā śarma yacchatu ||

Where arrows alight like shaven-headed boys may brahmaṇaspati, may Aditi, grant us happiness every day.

मर्माणि ते वर्मणा छादयामि सोमस्त्वा राजामृतेनानु वस्ताम् । उरोर्वरीयो वरुणस्ते कृणोतु जयन्तं त्वानु देवा मदन्तु ॥

marmāṇi te varmaṇā chādayāmi somastvā rājāmṛtenānu vastām | urorvarīyo varuṇaste kṛṇotu jayantaṃ tvānu devā madantu ||

I cover your vital parts with armour; may the royal Soma invest you with ambrosia; may Varuṇa amplify your ample felicity; may the gods rejoice (at beholding you) triumphant.

यो नः स्वो अरणो यश्च निष्ट्यो जिघांसति । देवास्तं सर्वे धूर्वन्तु ब्रह्म वर्म ममान्तरम् ॥

yo naḥ svo araṇo yaśca niṣṭyo jighāṃsati | devāstaṃ sarve dhūrvantu brahma varma mamāntaram ||

Whoever, whether an unfriendly relative or a stranger, desires to kill us, may all the gods destroy him; prayer is my best armour
