[rv-6-48] • 22 श्लोकाः

यज्ञायज्ञा वो अग्नये गिरागिरा च दक्षसे । प्रप्र वयममृतं जातवेदसं प्रियं मित्रं न शंसिषम् ॥

yajñāyajñā vo agnaye girāgirā ca dakṣase | prapra vayamamṛtaṃ jātavedasaṃ priyaṃ mitraṃ na śaṃsiṣam ||

At every sacrifice (honour) the mighty Agni with your reiterated praise, while we glorify him, the immortal, who knows all things, our dear friend.

ऊर्जो नपातं स हिनायमस्मयुर्दाशेम हव्यदातये । भुवद्वाजेष्वविता भुवद्वृध उत त्राता तनूनाम् ॥

ūrjo napātaṃ sa hināyamasmayurdāśema havyadātaye | bhuvadvājeṣvavitā bhuvadvṛdha uta trātā tanūnām ||

The son of strength, for he verily is propitious to us, to whom let us offer oblations as to the conveyer of them (to the gods); may he be our defender in battles; may he be our benefactor and the grandsire of our offspring.

वृषा ह्यग्ने अजरो महान्विभास्यर्चिषा । अजस्रेण शोचिषा शोशुचच्छुचे सुदीतिभिः सु दीदिहि ॥

vṛṣā hyagne ajaro mahānvibhāsyarciṣā | ajasreṇa śociṣā śośucacchuce sudītibhiḥ su dīdihi ||

Agni, who are the showerer (of benefits), mighty, and exempt from decay, you shine with (great) splendour; you are resplendent, brilliant (Agni), with unfading lustre; shine forth with glorious rays.

महो देवान्यजसि यक्ष्यानुषक्तव क्रत्वोत दंसना । अर्वाचः सीं कृणुह्यग्नेऽवसे रास्व वाजोत वंस्व ॥

maho devānyajasi yakṣyānuṣaktava kratvota daṃsanā | arvācaḥ sīṃ kṛṇuhyagne'vase rāsva vājota vaṃsva ||

You sacrifice to the mighty gods; sacrifice (for us) continually, for (sacrifice is perfected) by your wisdom and your acts; bring them down, Agni, for our salvation; present (to them) the sacrificial food, partake of it yourself.

यमापो अद्रयो वना गर्भमृतस्य पिप्रति । सहसा यो मथितो जायते नृभिः पृथिव्या अधि सानवि ॥

yamāpo adrayo vanā garbhamṛtasya piprati | sahasā yo mathito jāyate nṛbhiḥ pṛthivyā adhi sānavi ||

(You are he) whom the waters, the mountains, the woods, nourish as the embryo of sacrifice; who, churned with strength by the performers (of the rite), are genitive rated in the highest plural ce of the earth.

आ यः पप्रौ भानुना रोदसी उभे धूमेन धावते दिवि । तिरस्तमो ददृश ऊर्म्यास्वा श्यावास्वरुषो वृषा श्यावा अरुषो वृषा ॥

ā yaḥ paprau bhānunā rodasī ubhe dhūmena dhāvate divi | tirastamo dadṛśa ūrmyāsvā śyāvāsvaruṣo vṛṣā śyāvā aruṣo vṛṣā ||

He who fills both heaven and earth with light, who mounts with smoke into the sky, this radiant showerer (of benefits) is beheld in the dark nights dispersing the gloom; this radiant showerer (of benefits) presides over the dark nights.

बृहद्भिरग्ने अर्चिभिः शुक्रेण देव शोचिषा । भरद्वाजे समिधानो यविष्ठ्य रेवन्नः शुक्र दीदिहि द्युमत्पावक दीदिहि ॥

bṛhadbhiragne arcibhiḥ śukreṇa deva śociṣā | bharadvāje samidhāno yaviṣṭhya revannaḥ śukra dīdihi dyumatpāvaka dīdihi ||

Divine, resplendent Agni, youngest (of the gods), when kindled by Bharadvāja, shines with many flames, with pure lustre, (conferring) riches upon us; shine, resplendent purifier.

विश्वासां गृहपतिर्विशामसि त्वमग्ने मानुषीणाम् । शतं पूर्भिर्यविष्ठ पाह्यंहसः समेद्धारं शतं हिमाः स्तोतृभ्यो ये च ददति ॥

viśvāsāṃ gṛhapatirviśāmasi tvamagne mānuṣīṇām | śataṃ pūrbhiryaviṣṭha pāhyaṃhasaḥ sameddhāraṃ śataṃ himāḥ stotṛbhyo ye ca dadati ||

You, Agni, are the lord of the dwelling, and of all men the descendants of Manu; protect me, youngest (of the gods), when kindling you, with a hundred defences against iniquity; (grant me) a hundred winters, (as well as to those) who bestow gifts upon your worshippers.

त्वं नश्चित्र ऊत्या वसो राधांसि चोदय । अस्य रायस्त्वमग्ने रथीरसि विदा गाधं तुचे तु नः ॥

tvaṃ naścitra ūtyā vaso rādhāṃsi codaya | asya rāyastvamagne rathīrasi vidā gādhaṃ tuce tu naḥ ||

Wonderful (Agni), giver of dwellings, encourage us by (your) protection, and (the gift of) riches, for you are he conveyer, Agni, of this wealth; quickly bestow permanence upon our progeny.

पर्षि तोकं तनयं पर्तृभिष्ट्वमदब्धैरप्रयुत्वभिः । अग्ने हेऴांसि दैव्या युयोधि नोऽदेवानि ह्वरांसि च ॥

parṣi tokaṃ tanayaṃ partṛbhiṣṭvamadabdhairaprayutvabhiḥ | agne heḻāṃsi daivyā yuyodhi no'devāni hvarāṃsi ca ||

You protect with uninjurable, irremovable defences (our) sons and grandsons; remove far from us celestial wrath and human malevolence.

आ सखायः सबर्दुघां धेनुमजध्वमुप नव्यसा वचः । सृजध्वमनपस्फुराम् ॥

ā sakhāyaḥ sabardughāṃ dhenumajadhvamupa navyasā vacaḥ | sṛjadhvamanapasphurām ||

Approach, friends the milk-yielding cow with a new song, and let her loose unharmed.

या शर्धाय मारुताय स्वभानवे श्रवोऽमृत्यु धुक्षत । या मृऴीके मरुतां तुराणां या सुम्नैरेवयावरी ॥

yā śardhāya mārutāya svabhānave śravo'mṛtyu dhukṣata | yā mṛḻīke marutāṃ turāṇāṃ yā sumnairevayāvarī ||

She who yields immortal food to the powerful, self-irradiating band of the Maruts, who (is anxious) for the gratiication of the self-moving Maruts, who traverse the sky with (the passing waters0, shedding delight.

भरद्वाजायाव धुक्षत द्विता । धेनुं च विश्वदोहसमिषं च विश्वभोजसम् ॥

bharadvājāyāva dhukṣata dvitā | dhenuṃ ca viśvadohasamiṣaṃ ca viśvabhojasam ||

Milk for Bharadvāja the twofold (blessing), the cow that gives milk to the universe, food that is sufficient for all.

तं व इन्द्रं न सुक्रतुं वरुणमिव मायिनम् । अर्यमणं न मन्द्रं सृप्रभोजसं विष्णुं न स्तुष आदिशे ॥

taṃ va indraṃ na sukratuṃ varuṇamiva māyinam | aryamaṇaṃ na mandraṃ sṛprabhojasaṃ viṣṇuṃ na stuṣa ādiśe ||

I praise you, the (company of Maruts), for the distribution of wealth; (the company that), like Indra, is the achiever of great deeds; sagacious like Varuṇa; adorable as Aryaman and munificent as Viṣṇu.

त्वेषं शर्धो न मारुतं तुविष्वण्यनर्वाणं पूषणं सं यथा शता । सं सहस्रा कारिषच्चर्षणिभ्य आँ आविर्गूऴ्हा वसू करत्सुवेदा नो वसू करत् ॥

tveṣaṃ śardho na mārutaṃ tuviṣvaṇyanarvāṇaṃ pūṣaṇaṃ saṃ yathā śatā | saṃ sahasrā kāriṣaccarṣaṇibhya ā~ āvirgūḻhā vasū karatsuvedā no vasū karat ||

I now (glorify) the brilliant vigour of the company of the Maruts, loud-sounding, irresistible, cherishing, whereby hundreds and thousands (of treasures) are bestowed collectively upon men; may that (company) make hidden wealth manifes; may it render the wealth easily accessible to us.

आ मा पूषन्नुप द्रव शंसिषं नु ते अपिकर्ण आघृणे । अघा अर्यो अरातयः ॥

ā mā pūṣannupa drava śaṃsiṣaṃ nu te apikarṇa āghṛṇe | aghā aryo arātayaḥ ||

Hasten, Pūṣan, to me; (repel), bright deity, (all) deadly assailing foes; close at your side I repeat your praise.

मा काकम्बीरमुद्वृहो वनस्पतिमशस्तीर्वि हि नीनशः । मोत सूरो अह एवा चन ग्रीवा आदधते वेः ॥

mā kākambīramudvṛho vanaspatimaśastīrvi hi nīnaśaḥ | mota sūro aha evā cana grīvā ādadhate veḥ ||

Uproot not, Pūṣan, the forest lord with its progeny of crows; utterly destroy those who are my revilers; let not the adversary ensnare me, as (fowlers) set snares for birds.

दृतेरिव तेऽवृकमस्तु सख्यम् । अच्छिद्रस्य दधन्वतः सुपूर्णस्य दधन्वतः ॥

dṛteriva te'vṛkamastu sakhyam | acchidrasya dadhanvataḥ supūrṇasya dadhanvataḥ ||

May your friendship be unbroken, like (the surface) of a skin without a flaw, containing curds.

परो हि मर्त्यैरसि समो देवैरुत श्रिया । अभि ख्यः पूषन्पृतनासु नस्त्वमवा नूनं यथा पुरा ॥

paro hi martyairasi samo devairuta śriyā | abhi khyaḥ pūṣanpṛtanāsu nastvamavā nūnaṃ yathā purā ||

Supreme are you above mortals; equal in glory are you to the gods; therefore, Pūṣan, regard us (favourably) in battles; defend us at present as (you have defended) those of old.

वामी वामस्य धूतयः प्रणीतिरस्तु सूनृता । देवस्य वा मरुतो मर्त्यस्य वेजानस्य प्रयज्यवः ॥

vāmī vāmasya dhūtayaḥ praṇītirastu sūnṛtā | devasya vā maruto martyasya vejānasya prayajyavaḥ ||

Maruts, agitators, especially to be adored, may your kind and true speech be our conductress; that plural asant (speech which is the guide) to desirable (wealth) for both gods and sacrificing mortals.

सद्यश्चिद्यस्य चर्कृतिः परि द्यां देवो नैति सूर्यः । त्वेषं शवो दधिरे नाम यज्ञियं मरुतो वृत्रहं शवो ज्येष्ठं वृत्रहं शवः ॥

sadyaścidyasya carkṛtiḥ pari dyāṃ devo naiti sūryaḥ | tveṣaṃ śavo dadhire nāma yajñiyaṃ maruto vṛtrahaṃ śavo jyeṣṭhaṃ vṛtrahaṃ śavaḥ ||

Whose functions spread quickly round the heavens, like (the light of) the divine sun, since the maruts possess brillian, foe-humiliating, and adorable foe-destroying strength, most excellent foe-destroying strength.

सकृद्ध द्यौरजायत सकृद्भूमिरजायत । पृश्न्या दुग्धं सकृत्पयस्तदन्यो नानु जायते ॥

sakṛddha dyaurajāyata sakṛdbhūmirajāyata | pṛśnyā dugdhaṃ sakṛtpayastadanyo nānu jāyate ||

Once, indeed, was the heaven genitive rated; once was the earth born; once was the milk of Pṛśni (pṛśnayai vai payaso maruto jātāḥ: Taittirīya Saṃhitā 2.2.11.4) drawn other than that was not similarly genitive rated.
