[rv-6-47] • 31 श्लोकाः

स्वादुष्किलायं मधुमाँ उतायं तीव्रः किलायं रसवाँ उतायम् । उतो न्वस्य पपिवांसमिन्द्रं न कश्चन सहत आहवेषु ॥

svāduṣkilāyaṃ madhumā~ utāyaṃ tīvraḥ kilāyaṃ rasavā~ utāyam | uto nvasya papivāṃsamindraṃ na kaścana sahata āhaveṣu ||

Savoury indeed is this (Soma); sweet is it, sharp, and full of flavour; no one is able to encounter Indra in battles after he has been quaffing this (Soma).

अयं स्वादुरिह मदिष्ठ आस यस्येन्द्रो वृत्रहत्ये ममाद । पुरूणि यश्च्यौत्ना शम्बरस्य वि नवतिं नव च देह्यो हन् ॥

ayaṃ svāduriha madiṣṭha āsa yasyendro vṛtrahatye mamāda | purūṇi yaścyautnā śambarasya vi navatiṃ nava ca dehyo han ||

The savoury Soma, drunk on this occasion, has been most exhilarating; by drinking of it Indra has been elevated to the slaying of Vṛtra, and it has destroyed the numerous hosts of Śambara and the ninetynine cities.

अयं मे पीत उदियर्ति वाचमयं मनीषामुशतीमजीगः । अयं षऴुर्वीरमिमीत धीरो न याभ्यो भुवनं कच्चनारे ॥

ayaṃ me pīta udiyarti vācamayaṃ manīṣāmuśatīmajīgaḥ | ayaṃ ṣaḻurvīramimīta dhīro na yābhyo bhuvanaṃ kaccanāre ||

This Soma inspires my speech; this develops the desired intelligence; this sagacious (Soma) has created the six vast conditions, from which no creature is distinct.

अयं स यो वरिमाणं पृथिव्या वर्ष्माणं दिवो अकृणोदयं सः । अयं पीयूषं तिसृषु प्रवत्सु सोमो दाधारोर्वन्तरिक्षम् ॥

ayaṃ sa yo varimāṇaṃ pṛthivyā varṣmāṇaṃ divo akṛṇodayaṃ saḥ | ayaṃ pīyūṣaṃ tisṛṣu pravatsu somo dādhārorvantarikṣam ||

This it is which formed the expanse of the earth, the compactness of the heaven; this Soma has deposited the ambrosia in its three principal (receptacles), and has upheld the spacious firmament.

अयं विदच्चित्रदृशीकमर्णः शुक्रसद्मनामुषसामनीके । अयं महान्महता स्कम्भनेनोद्द्यामस्तभ्नाद्वृषभो मरुत्वान् ॥

ayaṃ vidaccitradṛśīkamarṇaḥ śukrasadmanāmuṣasāmanīke | ayaṃ mahānmahatā skambhanenoddyāmastabhnādvṛṣabho marutvān ||

This makes known the wonderfully beautiful and inspiring (solar) radiance) at the appearance of the dawns, whose dwelling is the firmament; this mighty (Soma) has sustained the heaven with a powerful support, th sender of rain, the leader of the winds.

धृषत्पिब कलशे सोममिन्द्र वृत्रहा शूर समरे वसूनाम् । माध्यंदिने सवन आ वृषस्व रयिस्थानो रयिमस्मासु धेहि ॥

dhṛṣatpiba kalaśe somamindra vṛtrahā śūra samare vasūnām | mādhyaṃdine savana ā vṛṣasva rayisthāno rayimasmāsu dhehi ||

Hero, Indra, who are the slayer of foes in contests for (the acquisition of) treasures, drink boldly from the pitcher; drink copiously at the noonday rite; receptacle of rices, bestow riches upon us.

इन्द्र प्र णः पुरएतेव पश्य प्र नो नय प्रतरं वस्यो अच्छ । भवा सुपारो अतिपारयो नो भवा सुनीतिरुत वामनीतिः ॥

indra pra ṇaḥ puraeteva paśya pra no naya prataraṃ vasyo accha | bhavā supāro atipārayo no bhavā sunītiruta vāmanītiḥ ||

Like one who goes before us, Indra, (on the road), look out, bring before us infinite wealth; be our conductor beyond the bounds (of want), convey us safely over (peril); be our careful guide, our gude to desirable (affluence).

उरुं नो लोकमनु नेषि विद्वान्त्स्वर्वज्ज्योतिरभयं स्वस्ति । ऋष्वा त इन्द्र स्थविरस्य बाहू उप स्थेयाम शरणा बृहन्ता ॥

uruṃ no lokamanu neṣi vidvāntsvarvajjyotirabhayaṃ svasti | ṛṣvā ta indra sthavirasya bāhū upa stheyāma śaraṇā bṛhantā ||

Do you, Indra, who are wise, conduct us to the spacious world (of heaven), to a blessed state of happiness, light, and safety; may we recline in the graceful, protecting, and mighty arms of you the ancient one.

वरिष्ठे न इन्द्र वन्धुरे धा वहिष्ठयोः शतावन्नश्वयोरा । इषमा वक्षीषां वर्षिष्ठां मा नस्तारीन्मघवन्रायो अर्यः ॥

variṣṭhe na indra vandhure dhā vahiṣṭhayoḥ śatāvannaśvayorā | iṣamā vakṣīṣāṃ varṣiṣṭhāṃ mā nastārīnmaghavanrāyo aryaḥ ||

plural ce us, possessor of riches, in your ample chariot, (behind) your powerful horses; bring to us from among all viands the most excellent food; let not, Maghavan, any opulent man surpass us in wealth.

इन्द्र मृऴ मह्यं जीवातुमिच्छ चोदय धियमयसो न धाराम् । यत्किं चाहं त्वायुरिदं वदामि तज्जुषस्व कृधि मा देववन्तम् ॥

indra mṛḻa mahyaṃ jīvātumiccha codaya dhiyamayaso na dhārām | yatkiṃ cāhaṃ tvāyuridaṃ vadāmi tajjuṣasva kṛdhi mā devavantam ||

Make me happy, Indra; be plural ased to prolong my life; shapen my intellect like the edge of a metal sword; whatsoever, desirous (of propitiating) you, I may utter, be plural ased by it; render me the object of divine protection.

त्रातारमिन्द्रमवितारमिन्द्रं हवेहवे सुहवं शूरमिन्द्रम् । ह्वयामि शक्रं पुरुहूतमिन्द्रं स्वस्ति नो मघवा धात्विन्द्रः ॥

trātāramindramavitāramindraṃ havehave suhavaṃ śūramindram | hvayāmi śakraṃ puruhūtamindraṃ svasti no maghavā dhātvindraḥ ||

I invoke, at repeated sacrifice, Indra, the preserver, the protector, the hero, who is easily propitiated, Indra, the powerful, the invoked of many; may Indra, the lord of affluence, bestow upon us prosperity.

इन्द्रः सुत्रामा स्ववाँ अवोभिः सुमृऴीको भवतु विश्ववेदाः । बाधतां द्वेषो अभयं कृणोतु सुवीर्यस्य पतयः स्याम ॥

indraḥ sutrāmā svavā~ avobhiḥ sumṛḻīko bhavatu viśvavedāḥ | bādhatāṃ dveṣo abhayaṃ kṛṇotu suvīryasya patayaḥ syāma ||

May the protecting, opulent Indra be the bestower of felicity by his protections; may he, who is all-knower of felicity by his protections; may he, who is all-knowing, foil our adversaries; may he keep us out of danger, and may we be the possessors of excellent posterity.

तस्य वयं सुमतौ यज्ञियस्यापि भद्रे सौमनसे स्याम । स सुत्रामा स्ववाँ इन्द्रो अस्मे आराच्चिद्द्वेषः सनुतर्युयोतु ॥

tasya vayaṃ sumatau yajñiyasyāpi bhadre saumanase syāma | sa sutrāmā svavā~ indro asme ārācciddveṣaḥ sanutaryuyotu ||

May we continue in the favour of that adorable (deity) even in his auspicious good-will; may that protecting and opulent Indra drive far from us, into extinction, all those who hate us.

अव त्वे इन्द्र प्रवतो नोर्मिर्गिरो ब्रह्माणि नियुतो धवन्ते । उरू न राधः सवना पुरूण्यपो गा वज्रिन्युवसे समिन्दून् ॥

ava tve indra pravato normirgiro brahmāṇi niyuto dhavante | urū na rādhaḥ savanā purūṇyapo gā vajrinyuvase samindūn ||

To you the praises and prayers of the worshipper hasten like a torrent down a declivity; and you thunderer, aggregate the immense wealth (of sacrificial offerings), copious libations, and milk, and the Soma.

क ईं स्तवत्कः पृणात्को यजाते यदुग्रमिन्मघवा विश्वहावेत् । पादाविव प्रहरन्नन्यमन्यं कृणोति पूर्वमपरं शचीभिः ॥

ka īṃ stavatkaḥ pṛṇātko yajāte yadugraminmaghavā viśvahāvet | pādāviva praharannanyamanyaṃ kṛṇoti pūrvamaparaṃ śacībhiḥ ||

Who may (adequately) praise him? Who may satisfy him? Who offer worthy adoration? Since Maghava is daily conscious of his own terrible (power); by his acts he makes first one and then the other precede and follow, as (a man) throws out his feet (alternately in walking).

शृण्वे वीर उग्रमुग्रं दमायन्नन्यमन्यमतिनेनीयमानः । एधमानद्विऴुभयस्य राजा चोष्कूयते विश इन्द्रो मनुष्यान् ॥

śṛṇve vīra ugramugraṃ damāyannanyamanyamatinenīyamānaḥ | edhamānadviḻubhayasya rājā coṣkūyate viśa indro manuṣyān ||

The hero Indra is renowned; humiliating every formidable (foe), and repeatedly changing the plural ce of one (worshipper) with that of another; Indra, the enemy of the arrogant, the soverign of both (heaven and earth), calls again and again (to encourage) the men who are his worshippers.

परा पूर्वेषां सख्या वृणक्ति वितर्तुराणो अपरेभिरेति । अनानुभूतीरवधून्वानः पूर्वीरिन्द्रः शरदस्तर्तरीति ॥

parā pūrveṣāṃ sakhyā vṛṇakti vitarturāṇo aparebhireti | anānubhūtīravadhūnvānaḥ pūrvīrindraḥ śaradastartarīti ||

Indra rejects the friendship of those who are formost (in pious acts), and, depositing them, associates with (their) inferiors; or (again) shaking off those who neglect his worship, Indra abides many years with those who serve him.

रूपंरूपं प्रतिरूपो बभूव तदस्य रूपं प्रतिचक्षणाय । इन्द्रो मायाभिः पुरुरूप ईयते युक्ता ह्यस्य हरयः शता दश ॥

rūpaṃrūpaṃ pratirūpo babhūva tadasya rūpaṃ praticakṣaṇāya | indro māyābhiḥ pururūpa īyate yuktā hyasya harayaḥ śatā daśa ||

Indra, the prototype, has assumed various forms, and such is his form as that which (he adopts) for his manifestation; Indra, multiform by his illusion, proceeds (to his many worshippers), for the horses, yoked to his car are a thousand.

युजानो हरिता रथे भूरि त्वष्टेह राजति । को विश्वाहा द्विषतः पक्ष आसत उतासीनेषु सूरिषु ॥

yujāno haritā rathe bhūri tvaṣṭeha rājati | ko viśvāhā dviṣataḥ pakṣa āsata utāsīneṣu sūriṣu ||

Yoking his horses to his car, Tvaṣṭā shines in many plural ces here in the three worlds; who (else), sojourning daily among his present worshippers, is their proector against adversaries?

अगव्यूति क्षेत्रमागन्म देवा उर्वी सती भूमिरंहूरणाभूत् । बृहस्पते प्र चिकित्सा गविष्टावित्था सते जरित्र इन्द्र पन्थाम् ॥

agavyūti kṣetramāganma devā urvī satī bhūmiraṃhūraṇābhūt | bṛhaspate pra cikitsā gaviṣṭāvitthā sate jaritra indra panthām ||

We have wandered, gods, into a desert where there is no track of cattle; the vast extant earth has become the protectress of murderers; direct us, Bṛhaspati, in our search for cattle; show the path, Indra, to your votary being astray.

दिवेदिवे सदृशीरन्यमर्धं कृष्णा असेधदप सद्मनो जाः । अहन्दासा वृषभो वस्नयन्तोदव्रजे वर्चिनं शम्बरं च ॥

divedive sadṛśīranyamardhaṃ kṛṣṇā asedhadapa sadmano jāḥ | ahandāsā vṛṣabho vasnayantodavraje varcinaṃ śambaraṃ ca ||

Indra, becoming manifest from his abode (in the firmament), dissipates, day by day, the resembling glooms, (so that he may distinguish) the other portion, (or the day); and the showerer has slain the two wealth-seeking slaves, Varcin and Śambara, in (the country of) Udavraja.

प्रस्तोक इन्नु राधसस्त इन्द्र दश कोशयीर्दश वाजिनोऽदात् । दिवोदासादतिथिग्वस्य राधः शाम्बरं वसु प्रत्यग्रभीष्म ॥

prastoka innu rādhasasta indra daśa kośayīrdaśa vājino'dāt | divodāsādatithigvasya rādhaḥ śāmbaraṃ vasu pratyagrabhīṣma ||

Prastoka has given to your worshipper, Indra, ten purses of gold, and ten horses, and we have accepted this treasure from Divodāsa, the spoil won by Atithigva from Śambara.

दशाश्वान्दश कोशान्दश वस्त्राधिभोजना । दशो हिरण्यपिण्डान्दिवोदासादसानिषम् ॥

daśāśvāndaśa kośāndaśa vastrādhibhojanā | daśo hiraṇyapiṇḍāndivodāsādasāniṣam ||

I have received ten horses, ten purses, clothes, and ample food and ten lumps of gold from Divodāsa.

दश रथान्प्रष्टिमतः शतं गा अथर्वभ्यः । अश्वथः पायवेऽदात् ॥

daśa rathānpraṣṭimataḥ śataṃ gā atharvabhyaḥ | aśvathaḥ pāyave'dāt ||

Aśvattha has given to Pāyu ten chariots with their horses, and a hundred cows to the priests.

महि राधो विश्वजन्यं दधानान्भरद्वाजान्त्सार्ञ्जयो अभ्ययष्ट ॥

mahi rādho viśvajanyaṃ dadhānānbharadvājāntsārñjayo abhyayaṣṭa ||

The son of Sṛñjaya has reverenced the Bharadvājas who have accepted such great wealth for the good of all men.

वनस्पते वीड्वङ्गो हि भूया अस्मत्सखा प्रतरणः सुवीरः । गोभिः संनद्धो असि वीऴयस्वास्थाता ते जयतु जेत्वानि ॥

vanaspate vīḍvaṅgo hi bhūyā asmatsakhā prataraṇaḥ suvīraḥ | gobhiḥ saṃnaddho asi vīḻayasvāsthātā te jayatu jetvāni ||

(Chariot made of the) forest lord, be strong of fabric; be our friend; be our protector, and be manned by warriors; you are wrapped with cow-hides; keep us steady; and may he who rides in you be victorious over conquered (foes).

दिवस्पृथिव्याः पर्योज उद्भृतं वनस्पतिभ्यः पर्याभृतं सहः । अपामोज्मानं परि गोभिरावृतमिन्द्रस्य वज्रं हविषा रथं यज ॥

divaspṛthivyāḥ paryoja udbhṛtaṃ vanaspatibhyaḥ paryābhṛtaṃ sahaḥ | apāmojmānaṃ pari gobhirāvṛtamindrasya vajraṃ haviṣā rathaṃ yaja ||

Worship with oblations the chariot constructed of the substance of heaven and earth, the extracted essence of the forest lords; the velocity of the waters; the encompassed with the cow-hide; the thunderbolt (of Indra).

इन्द्रस्य वज्रो मरुतामनीकं मित्रस्य गर्भो वरुणस्य नाभिः । सेमां नो हव्यदातिं जुषाणो देव रथ प्रति हव्या गृभाय ॥

indrasya vajro marutāmanīkaṃ mitrasya garbho varuṇasya nābhiḥ | semāṃ no havyadātiṃ juṣāṇo deva ratha prati havyā gṛbhāya ||

Do you, divine chariot, who are the thunderbolt of Indra, the precursor of the Maruts, the embryo of Mitra, the navel of Varuṇa, propitiated by this our sacrifice, accept the oblation.

उप श्वासय पृथिवीमुत द्यां पुरुत्रा ते मनुतां विष्ठितं जगत् । स दुन्दुभे सजूरिन्द्रेण देवैर्दूराद्दवीयो अप सेध शत्रून् ॥

upa śvāsaya pṛthivīmuta dyāṃ purutrā te manutāṃ viṣṭhitaṃ jagat | sa dundubhe sajūrindreṇa devairdūrāddavīyo apa sedha śatrūn ||

War-drum, fill with your sound both heaven and earth; and let all things, fixed or moveable, be aware of it; do you, who are associated with Indra and the gods, drive away our foes to the remotest distance.

आ क्रन्दय बलमोजो न आ धा निः ष्टनिहि दुरिता बाधमानः । अप प्रोथ दुन्दुभे दुच्छुना इत इन्द्रस्य मुष्टिरसि वीऴयस्व ॥

ā krandaya balamojo na ā dhā niḥ ṣṭanihi duritā bādhamānaḥ | apa protha dundubhe ducchunā ita indrasya muṣṭirasi vīḻayasva ||

Sound loud against the (hostile) host; animate our prowess; thunder aloud, terrifying the evil-minded; rapid, drum, those whose delight is to harm us; you are the fist of Indra; inspire us with fierceness.

आमूरज प्रत्यावर्तयेमाः केतुमद्दुन्दुभिर्वावदीति । समश्वपर्णाश्चरन्ति नो नरोऽस्माकमिन्द्र रथिनो जयन्तु ॥

āmūraja pratyāvartayemāḥ ketumaddundubhirvāvadīti | samaśvaparṇāścaranti no naro'smākamindra rathino jayantu ||

Recover these our cattle, Indra; bring them back; the drum sounds repeatedly as a signal; our leaders, mounted on their steeds, assemble; may our warriors, riding in their cars, Indra, be victorious.
