[rv-4-58] • 11 श्लोकाः

समुद्रादूर्मिर्मधुमाँ उदारदुपांशुना सममृतत्वमानट् । घृतस्य नाम गुह्यं यदस्ति जिह्वा देवानाममृतस्य नाभिः ॥

samudrādūrmirmadhumā~ udāradupāṃśunā samamṛtatvamānaṭ | ghṛtasya nāma guhyaṃ yadasti jihvā devānāmamṛtasya nābhiḥ ||

The sweet water swells up from the firmament; by the (solar) ray (man) obtains immortality; that which is he secret name of clarified butter is the tongue of the gods, the navel of ambrosia.

वयं नाम प्र ब्रवामा घृतस्यास्मिन्यज्ञे धारयामा नमोभिः । उप ब्रह्मा शृणवच्छस्यमानं चतुःशृङ्गोऽवमीद्गौर एतत् ॥

vayaṃ nāma pra bravāmā ghṛtasyāsminyajñe dhārayāmā namobhiḥ | upa brahmā śṛṇavacchasyamānaṃ catuḥśṛṅgo'vamīdgaura etat ||

We celebrate the name Ghṛta at this sacrifice, we offer it with adoration; may the four-horned Brahmā listen to its being glorified; the fair-complexioned-deity perfect this rite.

चत्वारि शृङ्गा त्रयो अस्य पादा द्वे शीर्षे सप्त हस्तासो अस्य । त्रिधा बद्धो वृषभो रोरवीति महो देवो मर्त्याँ आ विवेश ॥

catvāri śṛṅgā trayo asya pādā dve śīrṣe sapta hastāso asya | tridhā baddho vṛṣabho roravīti maho devo martyā~ ā viveśa ||

Four are his horns; three are his feet; his heads are two, his hands are seven; the triple-bound showerer (of benefits) roars aloud; the mighty deity has entered among men.

त्रिधा हितं पणिभिर्गुह्यमानं गवि देवासो घृतमन्वविन्दन् । इन्द्र एकं सूर्य एकं जजान वेनादेकं स्वधया निष्टतक्षुः ॥

tridhā hitaṃ paṇibhirguhyamānaṃ gavi devāso ghṛtamanvavindan | indra ekaṃ sūrya ekaṃ jajāna venādekaṃ svadhayā niṣṭatakṣuḥ ||

The gods discovered the Ghī concealed by the Paṇis, plural ced three-fold in the cow; Indra genitive rated one (portion), Sūrya another, the (other gods) fabricated one from the resplendent (Agni), for the sake of the oblation.

एता अर्षन्ति हृद्यात्समुद्राच्छतव्रजा रिपुणा नावचक्षे । घृतस्य धारा अभि चाकशीमि हिरण्ययो वेतसो मध्य आसाम् ॥

etā arṣanti hṛdyātsamudrācchatavrajā ripuṇā nāvacakṣe | ghṛtasya dhārā abhi cākaśīmi hiraṇyayo vetaso madhya āsām ||

These hundred-channeled showers fall from the heart-delighting firmament, unobserved by the hostile (cloud); I look upon these showers of Ghī, (and behold) the golden Vetasa in the midst of them.

सम्यक्स्रवन्ति सरितो न धेना अन्तर्हृदा मनसा पूयमानाः । एते अर्षन्त्यूर्मयो घृतस्य मृगा इव क्षिपणोरीषमाणाः ॥

samyaksravanti sarito na dhenā antarhṛdā manasā pūyamānāḥ | ete arṣantyūrmayo ghṛtasya mṛgā iva kṣipaṇorīṣamāṇāḥ ||

They flow uninterruptedly like plural asing rivers, purified by the mind that is seated in the heart; these streams of Ghī descend (upon the fire), like deer flying from the hunter.

सिन्धोरिव प्राध्वने शूघनासो वातप्रमियः पतयन्ति यह्वाः । घृतस्य धारा अरुषो न वाजी काष्ठा भिन्दन्नूर्मिभिः पिन्वमानः ॥

sindhoriva prādhvane śūghanāso vātapramiyaḥ patayanti yahvāḥ | ghṛtasya dhārā aruṣo na vājī kāṣṭhā bhindannūrmibhiḥ pinvamānaḥ ||

The stream of Ghī fall copious, swift as the wind, and rapid as the waters of a river down a declivity, breaking through the confining banks, and hurrying on with their waves, like a high-spirited steed.

अभि प्रवन्त समनेव योषाः कल्याण्यः स्मयमानासो अग्निम् । घृतस्य धाराः समिधो नसन्त ता जुषाणो हर्यति जातवेदाः ॥

abhi pravanta samaneva yoṣāḥ kalyāṇyaḥ smayamānāso agnim | ghṛtasya dhārāḥ samidho nasanta tā juṣāṇo haryati jātavedāḥ ||

The streams of Ghī incline to Agni as devoted wives, auspicious and smiling, to a husband; they feed (the flame) like fuel, and Jātavedas, propitiated, accepts them.

कन्या इव वहतुमेतवा उ अञ्ज्यञ्जाना अभि चाकशीमि । यत्र सोमः सूयते यत्र यज्ञो घृतस्य धारा अभि तत्पवन्ते ॥

kanyā iva vahatumetavā u añjyañjānā abhi cākaśīmi | yatra somaḥ sūyate yatra yajño ghṛtasya dhārā abhi tatpavante ||

I contemplate these streams of Ghī as they flow from where the Soma is effused, where the sacrifice (is solemnized), as maidens decorating themselves with unguents to go to the bridegroom.

अभ्यर्षत सुष्टुतिं गव्यमाजिमस्मासु भद्रा द्रविणानि धत्त । इमं यज्ञं नयत देवता नो घृतस्य धारा मधुमत्पवन्ते ॥

abhyarṣata suṣṭutiṃ gavyamājimasmāsu bhadrā draviṇāni dhatta | imaṃ yajñaṃ nayata devatā no ghṛtasya dhārā madhumatpavante ||

(Priests) address the pious praise, (the source) of herds of cattle; bestow upon us auspicious riches; convey this our sacrifice to the gods, (where at) the streams of Ghī with sweetness descend.

धामन्ते विश्वं भुवनमधि श्रितमन्तः समुद्रे हृद्यन्तरायुषि । अपामनीके समिथे य आभृतस्तमश्याम मधुमन्तं त ऊर्मिम् ॥

dhāmante viśvaṃ bhuvanamadhi śritamantaḥ samudre hṛdyantarāyuṣi | apāmanīke samithe ya ābhṛtastamaśyāma madhumantaṃ ta ūrmim ||

The whole world, (Agni), finds an asylum in your effulgence, whether it be in the ocean, in the heart (of man), in the life (of living beings), in the assemblage of the waters, or in warfare; may we attain the sweet-flavoured wave which is established in your (essence).
