[rv-4-38] • 10 श्लोकाः

उतो हि वां दात्रा सन्ति पूर्वा या पूरुभ्यस्त्रसदस्युर्नितोशे । क्षेत्रासां ददथुरुर्वरासां घनं दस्युभ्यो अभिभूतिमुग्रम् ॥

uto hi vāṃ dātrā santi pūrvā yā pūrubhyastrasadasyurnitośe | kṣetrāsāṃ dadathururvarāsāṃ ghanaṃ dasyubhyo abhibhūtimugram ||

Trasadasyu has bestowed upon many the ancient (gifts) which were obtained by the liberal (prince) through your (favour, Heaven and Earth) you two have given a horse, a son, a weapon (for the destruction) of the Dasyus, fierce and foe-subduing.

उत वाजिनं पुरुनिष्षिध्वानं दधिक्रामु ददथुर्विश्वकृष्टिम् । ऋजिप्यं श्येनं प्रुषितप्सुमाशुं चर्कृत्यमर्यो नृपतिं न शूरम् ॥

uta vājinaṃ puruniṣṣidhvānaṃ dadhikrāmu dadathurviśvakṛṣṭim | ṛjipyaṃ śyenaṃ pruṣitapsumāśuṃ carkṛtyamaryo nṛpatiṃ na śūram ||

And you two have given the swift Dadhikrā, the repeller of many (foes), the defender of all men, the straight-going, the graceful-moving, the resplendent, the rapid, the destroyer of enemies like a heroic prince.

यं सीमनु प्रवतेव द्रवन्तं विश्वः पूरुर्मदति हर्षमाणः । पड्भिर्गृध्यन्तं मेधयुं न शूरं रथतुरं वातमिव ध्रजन्तम् ॥

yaṃ sīmanu pravateva dravantaṃ viśvaḥ pūrurmadati harṣamāṇaḥ | paḍbhirgṛdhyantaṃ medhayuṃ na śūraṃ rathaturaṃ vātamiva dhrajantam ||

Whom all men, rejoicing, praise, rushing everywhere, as if down a precipice, springing with his feet like a hero eager for war, drawing a car, and going as swift as the wind.

यः स्मारुन्धानो गध्या समत्सु सनुतरश्चरति गोषु गच्छन् । आविॠजीको विदथा निचिक्यत्तिरो अरतिं पर्याप आयोः ॥

yaḥ smārundhāno gadhyā samatsu sanutaraścarati goṣu gacchan | āviṝjīko vidathā nicikyattiro aratiṃ paryāpa āyoḥ ||

Who, opposing the mingled multitude in battles, rushes eager, passing through the regions, whose vigour is manifestl, who, understanding what is to be known, puts to shame the adversary of the (pious) man.

उत स्मैनं वस्त्रमथिं न तायुमनु क्रोशन्ति क्षितयो भरेषु । नीचायमानं जसुरिं न श्येनं श्रवश्चाच्छा पशुमच्च यूथम् ॥

uta smainaṃ vastramathiṃ na tāyumanu krośanti kṣitayo bhareṣu | nīcāyamānaṃ jasuriṃ na śyenaṃ śravaścācchā paśumacca yūtham ||

Whom men call after in battles, as after a thief carrying off a garment, or as (after) a hungry hawk pouncing (upon his prey); they call after him, hastening to obtain food, or a herd of cattle.

उत स्मासु प्रथमः सरिष्यन्नि वेवेति श्रेणिभी रथानाम् । स्रजं कृण्वानो जन्यो न शुभ्वा रेणुं रेरिहत्किरणं ददश्वान् ॥

uta smāsu prathamaḥ sariṣyanni veveti śreṇibhī rathānām | srajaṃ kṛṇvāno janyo na śubhvā reṇuṃ rerihatkiraṇaṃ dadaśvān ||

And who, issuing forth the first in those encounters, rushes in various directions with rows of chariots; like an elegant (courser), friendly to man, decorated with a garland, raising the dust, and champing his bit.

उत स्य वाजी सहुरिॠतावा शुश्रूषमाणस्तन्वा समर्ये । तुरं यतीषु तुरयन्नृजिप्योऽधि भ्रुवोः किरते रेणुमृञ्जन् ॥

uta sya vājī sahuriṝtāvā śuśrūṣamāṇastanvā samarye | turaṃ yatīṣu turayannṛjipyo'dhi bhruvoḥ kirate reṇumṛñjan ||

And that swift (horse) enduring in battle, bestowing food, and doing service with his limbs, rushing swiftly upon the quick-moving (host of the enemy), going straight onward, and tossing up the dust, throws it above his brows.

उत स्मास्य तन्यतोरिव द्योॠघायतो अभियुजो भयन्ते । यदा सहस्रमभि षीमयोधीद्दुर्वर्तुः स्मा भवति भीम ऋञ्जन् ॥

uta smāsya tanyatoriva dyoṝghāyato abhiyujo bhayante | yadā sahasramabhi ṣīmayodhīddurvartuḥ smā bhavati bhīma ṛñjan ||

And the adversaries of that foe-destroying steed, like (those) of the brilliant thunderbolt, are alarmed; for when he contends, even against thousands on every side, then, rousing (his spirit), he is fearful and irresistible.

उत स्मास्य पनयन्ति जना जूतिं कृष्टिप्रो अभिभूतिमाशोः । उतैनमाहुः समिथे वियन्तः परा दधिक्रा असरत्सहस्रैः ॥

uta smāsya panayanti janā jūtiṃ kṛṣṭipro abhibhūtimāśoḥ | utainamāhuḥ samithe viyantaḥ parā dadhikrā asaratsahasraiḥ ||

Men praise the overpowering rapidty of that fleet (steed), who is the accomplisher (of the desires) of mankind, and following him to battle, they have said, Dadhikrā with (his) thousands has gone forth against the foe.

आ दधिक्राः शवसा पञ्च कृष्टीः सूर्य इव ज्योतिषापस्ततान । सहस्रसाः शतसा वाज्यर्वा पृणक्तु मध्वा समिमा वचांसि ॥

ā dadhikrāḥ śavasā pañca kṛṣṭīḥ sūrya iva jyotiṣāpastatāna | sahasrasāḥ śatasā vājyarvā pṛṇaktu madhvā samimā vacāṃsi ||

Dadhikrā has spread abroad the five classes of beings by his strength, as the sun (diffuses) the waters by his radiance; may he, the giver of hundreds and thousands, associate these praises with agreeable (rewards).
