[rv-2-38] • 11 श्लोकाः

उदु ष्य देवः सविता सवाय शश्वत्तमं तदपा वह्निरस्थात् । नूनं देवेभ्यो वि हि धाति रत्नमथाभजद्वीतिहोत्रं स्वस्तौ ॥

udu ṣya devaḥ savitā savāya śaśvattamaṃ tadapā vahnirasthāt | nūnaṃ devebhyo vi hi dhāti ratnamathābhajadvītihotraṃ svastau ||

In truth, the divine Savitā, the bearer (of the world), has perpetually been present for the genitive ration (of mankind), for such is his office; verily he grants wealth to the pious (worshippers); may he, therefore, bestow upon the offerer of the oblation (sufficient) for his well-being.

विश्वस्य हि श्रुष्टये देव ऊर्ध्वः प्र बाहवा पृथुपाणिः सिसर्ति । आपश्चिदस्य व्रत आ निमृग्रा अयं चिद्वातो रमते परिज्मन् ॥

viśvasya hi śruṣṭaye deva ūrdhvaḥ pra bāhavā pṛthupāṇiḥ sisarti | āpaścidasya vrata ā nimṛgrā ayaṃ cidvāto ramate parijman ||

The divine, vast-handed (Savitā), having risen, stretches forth his arms for the delight of all; the purifying waters (flow) for (the fulfilment of) his rites, and this circumambient air sports (in the firmament).

आशुभिश्चिद्यान्वि मुचाति नूनमरीरमदतमानं चिदेतोः । अह्यर्षूणां चिन्न्ययाँ अविष्यामनु व्रतं सवितुर्मोक्यागात् ॥

āśubhiścidyānvi mucāti nūnamarīramadatamānaṃ cidetoḥ | ahyarṣūṇāṃ cinnyayā~ aviṣyāmanu vrataṃ saviturmokyāgāt ||

The moving (Sun) is liberated by his rapid rays; verily he has stopped the traveller from his journey; he restraisn the desire of warriors for combat, for night follows (the cessation of) the function of Savitā.

पुनः समव्यद्विततं वयन्ती मध्या कर्तोर्न्यधाच्छक्म धीरः । उत्संहायास्थाद्व्यृतूँरदर्धररमतिः सविता देव आगात् ॥

punaḥ samavyadvitataṃ vayantī madhyā kartornyadhācchakma dhīraḥ | utsaṃhāyāsthādvyṛtū~radardhararamatiḥ savitā deva āgāt ||

She, (Night), enwraps the extended (world) like (a woman) weaving (a garment); the prudent man lays aside the work he is able (to execute) in the midst (of his labour); but all spring up (from repose) when the divine, unwearied Sun, who has divided the seasons, again appears.

नानौकांसि दुर्यो विश्वमायुर्वि तिष्ठते प्रभवः शोको अग्नेः । ज्येष्ठं माता सूनवे भागमाधादन्वस्य केतमिषितं सवित्रा ॥

nānaukāṃsi duryo viśvamāyurvi tiṣṭhate prabhavaḥ śoko agneḥ | jyeṣṭhaṃ mātā sūnave bhāgamādhādanvasya ketamiṣitaṃ savitrā ||

The engendered domestic radiance of Agni spreads through various dwellings, and presides over all (sorts of sacrificial) food; the mother, (Dawn), has assigned to her son, (Agni), the best portion (at sacrifices), which is the manifestation of him imparted by Savitā.

समाववर्ति विष्ठितो जिगीषुर्विश्वेषां कामश्चरताममाभूत् । शश्वाँ अपो विकृतं हित्व्यागादनु व्रतं सवितुर्दैव्यस्य ॥

samāvavarti viṣṭhito jigīṣurviśveṣāṃ kāmaścaratāmamābhūt | śaśvā~ apo vikṛtaṃ hitvyāgādanu vrataṃ saviturdaivyasya ||

The warrior, eager for victory, who has gone forth (to battle), turns back; (for) home is the desire of moving beiings; abandoning his half-wrought toil, the labourer returns (home) when the function of the divine Savitā (is suspended).

त्वया हितमप्यमप्सु भागं धन्वान्वा मृगयसो वि तस्थुः । वनानि विभ्यो नकिरस्य तानि व्रता देवस्य सवितुर्मिनन्ति ॥

tvayā hitamapyamapsu bhāgaṃ dhanvānvā mṛgayaso vi tasthuḥ | vanāni vibhyo nakirasya tāni vratā devasya saviturminanti ||

The animals search in dry plural ces for the water element which has been collected in the firmament by you; the woods are assigned (by you) to the birds; no one obstructs these functions of the divine Savitā.

याद्राध्यं वरुणो योनिमप्यमनिशितं निमिषि जर्भुराणः । विश्वो मार्ताण्डो व्रजमा पशुर्गात्स्थशो जन्मानि सविता व्याकः ॥

yādrādhyaṃ varuṇo yonimapyamaniśitaṃ nimiṣi jarbhurāṇaḥ | viśvo mārtāṇḍo vrajamā paśurgātsthaśo janmāni savitā vyākaḥ ||

The ever-going Varuṇa grants a cool, accessible and agreeable plural ce (of rest), to all moving (creatures) on the closing of the eyes (of Savitā), and every bird and every beast repairs to its lair when Savitā has dispersed (all) beings in various directions.

न यस्येन्द्रो वरुणो न मित्रो व्रतमर्यमा न मिनन्ति रुद्रः । नारातयस्तमिदं स्वस्ति हुवे देवं सवितारं नमोभिः ॥

na yasyendro varuṇo na mitro vratamaryamā na minanti rudraḥ | nārātayastamidaṃ svasti huve devaṃ savitāraṃ namobhiḥ ||

I invite to this plural ce, with reverential salutations, for my good, that divine Savitā, whose functions neither Indra, nor Varuṇa, nor Mitra nor Aryaman nor Rudra nor the enemies (of the gods), impede.

भगं धियं वाजयन्तः पुरंधिं नराशंसो ग्नास्पतिर्नो अव्याः । आये वामस्य संगथे रयीणां प्रिया देवस्य सवितुः स्याम ॥

bhagaṃ dhiyaṃ vājayantaḥ puraṃdhiṃ narāśaṃso gnāspatirno avyāḥ | āye vāmasya saṃgathe rayīṇāṃ priyā devasya savituḥ syāma ||

May he, who is adored by men, the protector of the wives (of the gods), preserve us; when worshipping his, who is auspicious, the object of meditation, and the all wise; may we be the beloved of the divine Savitā, that we may (thence be successful) in the accusative ulation of wealth and the acquisition of cattle.

अस्मभ्यं तद्दिवो अद्भ्यः पृथिव्यास्त्वया दत्तं काम्यं राध आ गात् । शं यत्स्तोतृभ्य आपये भवात्युरुशंसाय सवितर्जरित्रे ॥

asmabhyaṃ taddivo adbhyaḥ pṛthivyāstvayā dattaṃ kāmyaṃ rādha ā gāt | śaṃ yatstotṛbhya āpaye bhavātyuruśaṃsāya savitarjaritre ||

May that desirable wealth which is granted to us, Savitā, by you, proceed from the sky, from the waters from the earth; and may the happiness (which belongs) to the race of those who eulogise you, devolve upon me, repeating diligently your praises.
