[rv-10-89] • 18 श्लोकाः

इन्द्रं स्तवा नृतमं यस्य मह्ना विबबाधे रोचना वि ज्मो अन्तान् । आ यः पप्रौ चर्षणीधृद्वरोभिः प्र सिन्धुभ्यो रिरिचानो महित्वा ॥

indraṃ stavā nṛtamaṃ yasya mahnā vibabādhe rocanā vi jmo antān | ā yaḥ paprau carṣaṇīdhṛdvarobhiḥ pra sindhubhyo riricāno mahitvā ||

Praise Indra, the chief leadere (of rites), whose glory surpasses the lustre (of others), and the ends ofthe earth; the sustainer of man, who exceeding the ocean in magnitude, fills (heaven and earth) with radiance.

स सूर्यः पर्युरू वरांस्येन्द्रो ववृत्याद्रथ्येव चक्रा । अतिष्ठन्तमपस्यं न सर्गं कृष्णा तमांसि त्विष्या जघान ॥

sa sūryaḥ paryurū varāṃsyendro vavṛtyādrathyeva cakrā | atiṣṭhantamapasyaṃ na sargaṃ kṛṣṇā tamāṃsi tviṣyā jaghāna ||

The heroic Indra causes numerous rays of light revolve as a charioteer (effects the rotation of) thewheels of the chariot; he destroys by his radiance the black darkness like a restless active horse.

समानमस्मा अनपावृदर्च क्ष्मया दिवो असमं ब्रह्म नव्यम् । वि यः पृष्ठेव जनिमान्यर्य इन्द्रश्चिकाय न सखायमीषे ॥

samānamasmā anapāvṛdarca kṣmayā divo asamaṃ brahma navyam | vi yaḥ pṛṣṭheva janimānyarya indraścikāya na sakhāyamīṣe ||

Sing along with me a new song, unceasing, surpassing heaven and earth, to him who like the pṛṣṭha(praises), born at sacrifices, overcomes his enemies, Indra who desires no friend.

इन्द्राय गिरो अनिशितसर्गा अपः प्रेरयं सगरस्य बुध्नात् । यो अक्षेणेव चक्रिया शचीभिर्विष्वक्तस्तम्भ पृथिवीमुत द्याम् ॥

indrāya giro aniśitasargā apaḥ prerayaṃ sagarasya budhnāt | yo akṣeṇeva cakriyā śacībhirviṣvaktastambha pṛthivīmuta dyām ||

I will utter praises to Indra in unceasing flow, (I will send) waters from the depth of the firmament (tohim) who has fixed heaven and earth on both sides by his acts as the wheels of a chariot (are fixed) by the axle.

आपान्तमन्युस्तृपलप्रभर्मा धुनिः शिमीवाञ्छरुमाँ ऋजीषी । सोमो विश्वान्यतसा वनानि नार्वागिन्द्रं प्रतिमानानि देभुः ॥

āpāntamanyustṛpalaprabharmā dhuniḥ śimīvāñcharumā~ ṛjīṣī | somo viśvānyatasā vanāni nārvāgindraṃ pratimānāni debhuḥ ||

Appeasing wrath, striking quickly, intimidating foes, doer of great deeds, armed with weapons,possessing the stale residue, Soma nourishes all the Atasa woods, they oppose no impediments against Indra.

न यस्य द्यावापृथिवी न धन्व नान्तरिक्षं नाद्रयः सोमो अक्षाः । यदस्य मन्युरधिनीयमानः शृणाति वीऴु रुजति स्थिराणि ॥

na yasya dyāvāpṛthivī na dhanva nāntarikṣaṃ nādrayaḥ somo akṣāḥ | yadasya manyuradhinīyamānaḥ śṛṇāti vīḻu rujati sthirāṇi ||

Of whom neither heaven and earth, nor the water, nor the firmament, nor the mountains (are theobstructions) for him doth the Soma exude, when his wrath reaching his enemies destroys the strong and breaksthe firm.

जघान वृत्रं स्वधितिर्वनेव रुरोज पुरो अरदन्न सिन्धून् । बिभेद गिरिं नवमिन्न कुम्भमा गा इन्द्रो अकृणुत स्वयुग्भिः ॥

jaghāna vṛtraṃ svadhitirvaneva ruroja puro aradanna sindhūn | bibheda giriṃ navaminna kumbhamā gā indro akṛṇuta svayugbhiḥ ||

(Indra) slew Vṛtra as an axe (cuts down) a tree; he demolished the cities (of the foes), he dug out therivers; he shattered the cloud like a new pitcher; with his allies (the Maruts) he recovered the cattle.

त्वं ह त्यदृणया इन्द्र धीरोऽसिर्न पर्व वृजिना शृणासि । प्र ये मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धाम युजं न जना मिनन्ति मित्रम् ॥

tvaṃ ha tyadṛṇayā indra dhīro'sirna parva vṛjinā śṛṇāsi | pra ye mitrasya varuṇasya dhāma yujaṃ na janā minanti mitram ||

You, Indra, who are wise, punish the guilt (of worshippers); you cut off their sins as a sword (cuts off)the limbs (of victims); (you cut off) the people who (ignorantly) injure the supporting (function) of Mitra, andVaruṇa, (which is) as it were their close friend.

प्र ये मित्रं प्रार्यमणं दुरेवाः प्र संगिरः प्र वरुणं मिनन्ति । न्यमित्रेषु वधमिन्द्र तुम्रं वृषन्वृषाणमरुषं शिशीहि ॥

pra ye mitraṃ prāryamaṇaṃ durevāḥ pra saṃgiraḥ pra varuṇaṃ minanti | nyamitreṣu vadhamindra tumraṃ vṛṣanvṛṣāṇamaruṣaṃ śiśīhi ||

Against those who sinfully offend against Mitra, Aryaman, your companons (the Maruts) and Varuṇa,against these your enemies sharpen, Indra, showerer (of benefits), your rapid showering radiant thunderbolt.

इन्द्रो दिव इन्द्र ईशे पृथिव्या इन्द्रो अपामिन्द्र इत्पर्वतानाम् । इन्द्रो वृधामिन्द्र इन्मेधिराणामिन्द्रः क्षेमे योगे हव्य इन्द्रः ॥

indro diva indra īśe pṛthivyā indro apāmindra itparvatānām | indro vṛdhāmindra inmedhirāṇāmindraḥ kṣeme yoge havya indraḥ ||

Indra rules over heaven, Indra rules over earth, over the waters, and over the clouds; Indra rules overthe great and over the wise; Indra is to be invoked for the acquisition and preservation (of wealth).

प्राक्तुभ्य इन्द्रः प्र वृधो अहभ्यः प्रान्तरिक्षात्प्र समुद्रस्य धासेः । प्र वातस्य प्रथसः प्र ज्मो अन्तात्प्र सिन्धुभ्यो रिरिचे प्र क्षितिभ्यः ॥

prāktubhya indraḥ pra vṛdho ahabhyaḥ prāntarikṣātpra samudrasya dhāseḥ | pra vātasya prathasaḥ pra jmo antātpra sindhubhyo ririce pra kṣitibhyaḥ ||

Indra is vaster than the nights, vaster than the days, vaster than the firmament or the receptacle of theocean, vaster than the wind, or space or the ends of the earth; Indra exceeds the rivers and mankind.

प्र शोशुचत्या उषसो न केतुरसिन्वा ते वर्ततामिन्द्र हेतिः । अश्मेव विध्य दिव आ सृजानस्तपिष्ठेन हेषसा द्रोघमित्रान् ॥

pra śośucatyā uṣaso na keturasinvā te vartatāmindra hetiḥ | aśmeva vidhya diva ā sṛjānastapiṣṭhena heṣasā droghamitrān ||

May your unbroken weapon, Indra, proceed (against your foes), like the banner of the shining dawn,like a stone cast down from heaven, pierce those whose friendship is deceitful with your consumingloud-sounding (weapon).

अन्वह मासा अन्विद्वनान्यन्वोषधीरनु पर्वतासः । अन्विन्द्रं रोदसी वावशाने अन्वापो अजिहत जायमानम् ॥

anvaha māsā anvidvanānyanvoṣadhīranu parvatāsaḥ | anvindraṃ rodasī vāvaśāne anvāpo ajihata jāyamānam ||

The months attend upon Indra as soon as born, the forests attend upon him, the plural nts, themountains, the affectionate heaven and earth, and the waters (attend upon) him.

कर्हि स्वित्सा त इन्द्र चेत्यासदघस्य यद्भिनदो रक्ष एषत् । मित्रक्रुवो यच्छसने न गावः पृथिव्या आपृगमुया शयन्ते ॥

karhi svitsā ta indra cetyāsadaghasya yadbhinado rakṣa eṣat | mitrakruvo yacchasane na gāvaḥ pṛthivyā āpṛgamuyā śayante ||

Where was your (shaft) Indra, (which ought) to be hurled (against your enemies) when you did cleavethe rākṣasas hastening to war, and when the Mitrakru lay on the ground there in confusion like cattle at theplace of immolation?

शत्रूयन्तो अभि ये नस्ततस्रे महि व्राधन्त ओगणास इन्द्र । अन्धेनामित्रास्तमसा सचन्तां सुज्योतिषो अक्तवस्ताँ अभि ष्युः ॥

śatrūyanto abhi ye nastatasre mahi vrādhanta ogaṇāsa indra | andhenāmitrāstamasā sacantāṃ sujyotiṣo aktavastā~ abhi ṣyuḥ ||

May those adversaries, Indra, who press upon us, fiercely opposing us, and assembled in numbers,be overwhelmed with thick darkness, and may the bright (days) and nights overpower them. hymn you, and disregarding all other worshippers, come to us with your protection.

पुरूणि हि त्वा सवना जनानां ब्रह्माणि मन्दन्गृणतामृषीणाम् । इमामाघोषन्नवसा सहूतिं तिरो विश्वाँ अर्चतो याह्यर्वाङ् ॥

purūṇi hi tvā savanā janānāṃ brahmāṇi mandangṛṇatāmṛṣīṇām | imāmāghoṣannavasā sahūtiṃ tiro viśvā~ arcato yāhyarvāṅ ||

Details:

एवा ते वयमिन्द्र भुञ्जतीनां विद्याम सुमतीनां नवानाम् । विद्याम वस्तोरवसा गृणन्तो विश्वामित्रा उत त इन्द्र नूनम् ॥

evā te vayamindra bhuñjatīnāṃ vidyāma sumatīnāṃ navānām | vidyāma vastoravasā gṛṇanto viśvāmitrā uta ta indra nūnam ||

May we, the descendants of Viśvāmitra, sincerely praising you, Indra,by day for your protection,obtain your protecting (favours), may we obtain your recent (favours).

शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम् ॥

śunaṃ huvema maghavānamindramasminbhare nṛtamaṃ vājasātau | śṛṇvantamugramūtaye samatsu ghnantaṃ vṛtrāṇi saṃjitaṃ dhanānām ||

We invoke in this conflict for our protection the pure, the opulent Indra, the most heroic in the fight,
