सत्येनोत्तभिता भूमिः सूर्येणोत्तभिता द्यौः । ऋतेनादित्यास्तिष्ठन्ति दिवि सोमो अधि श्रितः ॥

satyenottabhitā bhūmiḥ sūryeṇottabhitā dyauḥ | ṛtenādityāstiṣṭhanti divi somo adhi śritaḥ ||

Earth is upheld by truth; heaven is upheld by the sun; the Ādityas are supported by sacrifice, Soma issupreme in heaven.

सोमेनादित्या बलिनः सोमेन पृथिवी मही । अथो नक्षत्राणामेषामुपस्थे सोम आहितः ॥

somenādityā balinaḥ somena pṛthivī mahī | atho nakṣatrāṇāmeṣāmupasthe soma āhitaḥ ||

By Soma the Ādityas are strong; by Soma the earth is great; Soma is stationed in the vicinity of theseNakṣatras.

सोमं मन्यते पपिवान्यत्सम्पिंषन्त्योषधिम् । सोमं यं ब्रह्माणो विदुर्न तस्याश्नाति कश्चन ॥

somaṃ manyate papivānyatsampiṃṣantyoṣadhim | somaṃ yaṃ brahmāṇo vidurna tasyāśnāti kaścana ||

He who has drunk thinks that the herb which men crush is the Soma; (but) that which theBrāhmaṇas know to be Soma,, of that no one partakes. {i.e., no one partakes of it unless he has sacrificed; ifthe Soma be taken as the moon, 'no one' will mean 'no one but the gods'].

आच्छद्विधानैर्गुपितो बार्हतैः सोम रक्षितः । ग्राव्णामिच्छृण्वन्तिष्ठसि न ते अश्नाति पार्थिवः ॥

ācchadvidhānairgupito bārhataiḥ soma rakṣitaḥ | grāvṇāmicchṛṇvantiṣṭhasi na te aśnāti pārthivaḥ ||

Concealed by means of coverings, protected by the Bārhats, O Soma, you abide listening to thegrinding-stones; no terrestrial being partakes of you.

यत्त्वा देव प्रपिबन्ति तत आ प्यायसे पुनः । वायुः सोमस्य रक्षिता समानां मास आकृतिः ॥

yattvā deva prapibanti tata ā pyāyase punaḥ | vāyuḥ somasya rakṣitā samānāṃ māsa ākṛtiḥ ||

When, O god, they quaff you, then do you renew yourself again; Vāyu is the guardian of Soma, themaker of years and months.

रैभ्यासीदनुदेयी नाराशंसी न्योचनी । सूर्याया भद्रमिद्वासो गाथयैति परिष्कृतम् ॥

raibhyāsīdanudeyī nārāśaṃsī nyocanī | sūryāyā bhadramidvāso gāthayaiti pariṣkṛtam ||

Raibhi was her companion; Nārāśaṃsī her slave; Sūrya's lovely dress was adorned by Gātha.

चित्तिरा उपबर्हणं चक्षुरा अभ्यञ्जनम् । द्यौर्भूमिः कोश आसीद्यदयात्सूर्या पतिम् ॥

cittirā upabarhaṇaṃ cakṣurā abhyañjanam | dyaurbhūmiḥ kośa āsīdyadayātsūryā patim ||

Citti (mind) was the pillow, the eye was the collyrium; heaven and earth were the box when Sūryawent to her husband.

स्तोमा आसन्प्रतिधयः कुरीरं छन्द ओपशः । सूर्याया अश्विना वराग्निरासीत्पुरोगवः ॥

stomā āsanpratidhayaḥ kurīraṃ chanda opaśaḥ | sūryāyā aśvinā varāgnirāsītpurogavaḥ ||

Hymns were the cross-bars (of the car); the Kurīra metre was the thong of the whip; the Aśvins wereSūrya's groomsmen; Agni was the leader of the procession.

सोमो वधूयुरभवदश्विनास्तामुभा वरा । सूर्यां यत्पत्ये शंसन्तीं मनसा सविताददात् ॥

somo vadhūyurabhavadaśvināstāmubhā varā | sūryāṃ yatpatye śaṃsantīṃ manasā savitādadāt ||

Soma was desirous of a bride; the two Aśvins were the two groomsmen when Savitā gave Sūrya,who was ripe for a husband, (to Soma endowed) with intelligence.

मनो अस्या अन आसीद्द्यौरासीदुत च्छदिः । शुक्रावनड्वाहावास्तां यदयात्सूर्या गृहम् ॥

mano asyā ana āsīddyaurāsīduta cchadiḥ | śukrāvanaḍvāhāvāstāṃ yadayātsūryā gṛham ||

Mind was her chariot, and heaven was the covering, the two shining (orbs) were the oxen whenSūrya went to (her husband's) dwelling.

ऋक्सामाभ्यामभिहितौ गावौ ते सामनावितः । श्रोत्रं ते चक्रे आस्तां दिवि पन्थाश्चराचारः ॥

ṛksāmābhyāmabhihitau gāvau te sāmanāvitaḥ | śrotraṃ te cakre āstāṃ divi panthāścarācāraḥ ||

Those two oxen yoked by the Ṛk and the Sāman march equally; the two wheels were your ears; themoving path (was) in heaven.

शुची ते चक्रे यात्या व्यानो अक्ष आहतः । अनो मनस्मयं सूर्यारोहत्प्रयती पतिम् ॥

śucī te cakre yātyā vyāno akṣa āhataḥ | ano manasmayaṃ sūryārohatprayatī patim ||

The two swift-moving wheels were your pure (cars). Vāyu was the fastened axle, Sūrya mountedthe chariot of the Mind, going to her lord.

सूर्याया वहतुः प्रागात्सविता यमवासृजत् । अघासु हन्यन्ते गावोऽर्जुन्योः पर्युह्यते ॥

sūryāyā vahatuḥ prāgātsavitā yamavāsṛjat | aghāsu hanyante gāvo'rjunyoḥ paryuhyate ||

Sūrya's bridal procession which Savitā despatched has advanced; the oxen are whipped along inthe Magha (constellations); she is borne (to her husband's house) in the Arjunī (constellations).

यदश्विना पृच्छमानावयातं त्रिचक्रेण वहतुं सूर्यायाः । विश्वे देवा अनु तद्वामजानन्पुत्रः पितराववृणीत पूषा ॥

yadaśvinā pṛcchamānāvayātaṃ tricakreṇa vahatuṃ sūryāyāḥ | viśve devā anu tadvāmajānanputraḥ pitarāvavṛṇīta pūṣā ||

When, Aśvins, you came in your three-wheeled car soliciting the marriage of Sūrya, then all thegods, assented and Pūṣan (your) son chose (you as) his parents.

यदयातं शुभस्पती वरेयं सूर्यामुप । क्वैकं चक्रं वामासीत्क्व देष्ट्राय तस्थथुः ॥

yadayātaṃ śubhaspatī vareyaṃ sūryāmupa | kvaikaṃ cakraṃ vāmāsītkva deṣṭrāya tasthathuḥ ||

When, lords of water, you came to the giver-away (to get) Sūrya, where was the one wheel of yourcar, where did you stand to make the gift?

द्वे ते चक्रे सूर्ये ब्रह्माण ऋतुथा विदुः । अथैकं चक्रं यद्गुहा तदद्धातय इद्विदुः ॥

dve te cakre sūrye brahmāṇa ṛtuthā viduḥ | athaikaṃ cakraṃ yadguhā tadaddhātaya idviduḥ ||

Sūrya, the Brāhmaṇas know your chariot wheels in their season; the single wheel that isconcealed, the sages know it also.

सूर्यायै देवेभ्यो मित्राय वरुणाय च । ये भूतस्य प्रचेतस इदं तेभ्योऽकरं नमः ॥

sūryāyai devebhyo mitrāya varuṇāya ca | ye bhūtasya pracetasa idaṃ tebhyo'karaṃ namaḥ ||

I offer this adoration to Sūrya, to the gods, to Mitra and Varuṇa, (and to all those) who areconsiderate to created beings.

पूर्वापरं चरतो माययैतौ शिशू क्रीऴन्तौ परि यातो अध्वरम् । विश्वान्यन्यो भुवनाभिचष्ट ऋतूँरन्यो विदधज्जायते पुनः ॥

pūrvāparaṃ carato māyayaitau śiśū krīḻantau pari yāto adhvaram | viśvānyanyo bhuvanābhicaṣṭa ṛtū~ranyo vidadhajjāyate punaḥ ||

These two (the sun and moon) wandering in thought one after the other, youthful, sportive, approachthe sacrifice; one (of them) looks over all worlds, the other regulating the seasons is born repeatedly.

नवोनवो भवति जायमानोऽह्नां केतुरुषसामेत्यग्रम् । भागं देवेभ्यो वि दधात्यायन्प्र चन्द्रमास्तिरते दीर्घमायुः ॥

navonavo bhavati jāyamāno'hnāṃ keturuṣasāmetyagram | bhāgaṃ devebhyo vi dadhātyāyanpra candramāstirate dīrghamāyuḥ ||

New every day (the moon) is born; the manifester of days he goes on front of the Dawns; hedistributes their portion to the gods as he goes; the moon protracts a long existence.

सुकिंशुकं शल्मलिं विश्वरूपं हिरण्यवर्णं सुवृतं सुचक्रम् । आ रोह सूर्ये अमृतस्य लोकं स्योनं पत्ये वहतुं कृणुष्व ॥

sukiṃśukaṃ śalmaliṃ viśvarūpaṃ hiraṇyavarṇaṃ suvṛtaṃ sucakram | ā roha sūrye amṛtasya lokaṃ syonaṃ patye vahatuṃ kṛṇuṣva ||

Ascend, Sūrya, the chariot made of good kiṃśuka wood and of śalmali, multiform, decorated withgold, well-covered, well-wheeled, prepare the happy world of the immortals, your marriage procession to yourhusband.

उदीर्ष्वातः पतिवती ह्येषा विश्वावसुं नमसा गीर्भिरीऴे । अन्यामिच्छ पितृषदं व्यक्तां स ते भागो जनुषा तस्य विद्धि ॥

udīrṣvātaḥ pativatī hyeṣā viśvāvasuṃ namasā gīrbhirīḻe | anyāmiccha pitṛṣadaṃ vyaktāṃ sa te bhāgo januṣā tasya viddhi ||

Rise up from hence, for this (damsel) has a husband; I worship Viśvāvasu with reverence and withhymns; seek for another maiden still dwelling in her father's house, decorated with ornaments; that is yourportion, know this (to your portion, take it) from your birth.

उदीर्ष्वातो विश्वावसो नमसेऴा महे त्वा । अन्यामिच्छ प्रफर्व्यं सं जायां पत्या सृज ॥

udīrṣvāto viśvāvaso namaseḻā mahe tvā | anyāmiccha prapharvyaṃ saṃ jāyāṃ patyā sṛja ||

Rise up from here, Viśvāvasu, we worship you with reverence; seek another maiden, one with largehips; leave the bride with her husband.

अनृक्षरा ऋजवः सन्तु पन्था येभिः सखायो यन्ति नो वरेयम् । समर्यमा सं भगो नो निनीयात्सं जास्पत्यं सुयममस्तु देवाः ॥

anṛkṣarā ṛjavaḥ santu panthā yebhiḥ sakhāyo yanti no vareyam | samaryamā saṃ bhago no ninīyātsaṃ jāspatyaṃ suyamamastu devāḥ ||

Smooth and straight be the paths by which our friends repair to the bride's father; may Aryaman, mayBhaga conduct us, and may the union of the wife and husband be easily accomplished, O gods.

प्र त्वा मुञ्चामि वरुणस्य पाशाद्येन त्वाबध्नात्सविता सुशेवः । ऋतस्य योनौ सुकृतस्य लोकेऽरिष्टां त्वा सह पत्या दधामि ॥

pra tvā muñcāmi varuṇasya pāśādyena tvābadhnātsavitā suśevaḥ | ṛtasya yonau sukṛtasya loke'riṣṭāṃ tvā saha patyā dadhāmi ||

I set you free from the noose of Varuṇa, wherewith the adorable Savitā had bound you; in the plural ceof sacrifice in the world of good deeds I unite you, unharmed, with your husband.

प्रेतो मुञ्चामि नामुतः सुबद्धाममुतस्करम् । यथेयमिन्द्र मीढ्वः सुपुत्रा सुभगासति ॥

preto muñcāmi nāmutaḥ subaddhāmamutaskaram | yatheyamindra mīḍhvaḥ suputrā subhagāsati ||

I set you free from there, not from here; I plural ce you here firmly bound; grant, Indra, showerer, that this(damsel) may have excellent children, and be very fortunate.

पूषा त्वेतो नयतु हस्तगृह्याश्विना त्वा प्र वहतां रथेन । गृहान्गच्छ गृहपत्नी यथासो वशिनी त्वं विदथमा वदासि ॥

pūṣā tveto nayatu hastagṛhyāśvinā tvā pra vahatāṃ rathena | gṛhāngaccha gṛhapatnī yathāso vaśinī tvaṃ vidathamā vadāsi ||

May Pūṣan lead you hence, taking you by the hand; may the Aśvins convey you away in their car,go to the dwelling (of your husband) as you are the mistress of the house; you, submissive (to your husband),give orders to his household.

इह प्रियं प्रजया ते समृध्यतामस्मिन्गृहे गार्हपत्याय जागृहि । एना पत्या तन्वं सं सृजस्वाधा जिव्री विदथमा वदाथः ॥

iha priyaṃ prajayā te samṛdhyatāmasmingṛhe gārhapatyāya jāgṛhi | enā patyā tanvaṃ saṃ sṛjasvādhā jivrī vidathamā vadāthaḥ ||

In this your (husband's family) may affection increase with offspring, be watchful over the domestic firein this house; unite your person n with this your husband; and both growing old together govern your household.

नीललोहितं भवति कृत्यासक्तिर्व्यज्यते । एधन्ते अस्या ज्ञातयः पतिर्बन्धेषु बध्यते ॥

nīlalohitaṃ bhavati kṛtyāsaktirvyajyate | edhante asyā jñātayaḥ patirbandheṣu badhyate ||

Blue and red is (her form); devoted (to her) is left behind; her kinsmen prosper, the husband is boundin bonds.

परा देहि शामुल्यं ब्रह्मभ्यो वि भजा वसु । कृत्यैषा पद्वती भूत्व्या जाया विशते पतिम् ॥

parā dehi śāmulyaṃ brahmabhyo vi bhajā vasu | kṛtyaiṣā padvatī bhūtvyā jāyā viśate patim ||

Put away the garment soiled by the body; give wealth to the Brāhmaṇas; this Kṛtyā having becomeendowed with feet, enters the husband's heart as his wife.

अश्रीरा तनूर्भवति रुशती पापयामुया । पतिर्यद्वध्वो वाससा स्वमङ्गमभिधित्सते ॥

aśrīrā tanūrbhavati ruśatī pāpayāmuyā | patiryadvadhvo vāsasā svamaṅgamabhidhitsate ||

The (bridegroom's) body is lacking in beauty; shining with this wicked (Kṛtyā), when he wishes to clothe his own limbs with his wife's garments.

ये वध्वश्चन्द्रं वहतुं यक्ष्मा यन्ति जनादनु । पुनस्तान्यज्ञिया देवा नयन्तु यत आगताः ॥

ye vadhvaścandraṃ vahatuṃ yakṣmā yanti janādanu | punastānyajñiyā devā nayantu yata āgatāḥ ||

May the adorable gods drive back again to the plural ce whence they came the diseases which followfrom (other) people the wife's golden bridal procession.

मा विदन्परिपन्थिनो य आसीदन्ति दम्पती । सुगेभिर्दुर्गमतीतामप द्रान्त्वरातयः ॥

mā vidanparipanthino ya āsīdanti dampatī | sugebhirdurgamatītāmapa drāntvarātayaḥ ||

Let not the robbers who approach the husband and wife reach them; may they by easy roads pass thedifficulty; may enemies keep aloof.

सुमङ्गलीरियं वधूरिमां समेत पश्यत । सौभाग्यमस्यै दत्त्वायाथास्तं वि परेतन ॥

sumaṅgalīriyaṃ vadhūrimāṃ sameta paśyata | saubhāgyamasyai dattvāyāthāstaṃ vi paretana ||

Fortunate is this bride, approach, behold her; having given her your congratulations, depart to yourseveral homes.

तृष्टमेतत्कटुकमेतदपाष्ठवद्विषवन्नैतदत्तवे । सूर्यां यो ब्रह्मा विद्यात्स इद्वाधूयमर्हति ॥

tṛṣṭametatkaṭukametadapāṣṭhavadviṣavannaitadattave | sūryāṃ yo brahmā vidyātsa idvādhūyamarhati ||

This (garment) is inflaming, it is pungent; it is like stale Soma; it is like poison; it is not fit to eat; theBrāhmaṇa, who knows Sūrya, verily desires the bridal (garment).

आशसनं विशसनमथो अधिविकर्तनम् । सूर्यायाः पश्य रूपाणि तानि ब्रह्मा तु शुन्धति ॥

āśasanaṃ viśasanamatho adhivikartanam | sūryāyāḥ paśya rūpāṇi tāni brahmā tu śundhati ||

Behold the forms of Sūrya, the āśasana (bordercloth) the viśasana (headcloth), the adhivikartana(divided skirt); of these the Brāhmaṇa relieves her.

गृभ्णामि ते सौभगत्वाय हस्तं मया पत्या जरदष्टिर्यथासः । भगो अर्यमा सविता पुरंधिर्मह्यं त्वादुर्गार्हपत्याय देवाः ॥

gṛbhṇāmi te saubhagatvāya hastaṃ mayā patyā jaradaṣṭiryathāsaḥ | bhago aryamā savitā puraṃdhirmahyaṃ tvādurgārhapatyāya devāḥ ||

I take your hand for good fortune, that you may attain old age with me as your husband; the godsBhaga, Aryaman, Savitā, Purandhi have given you to me, that I may be the master of a household.

तां पूषञ्छिवतमामेरयस्व यस्यां बीजं मनुष्या वपन्ति । या न ऊरू उशती विश्रयाते यस्यामुशन्तः प्रहराम शेपम् ॥

tāṃ pūṣañchivatamāmerayasva yasyāṃ bījaṃ manuṣyā vapanti | yā na ūrū uśatī viśrayāte yasyāmuśantaḥ praharāma śepam ||

Pūṣan, inspire her who is most auspicious, in whom men may now seed, who most affectionate maybe devoted to us, and in whom animated by desire we may beget progeny.

तुभ्यमग्रे पर्यवहन्त्सूर्यां वहतुना सह । पुनः पतिभ्यो जायां दा अग्ने प्रजया सह ॥

tubhyamagre paryavahantsūryāṃ vahatunā saha | punaḥ patibhyo jāyāṃ dā agne prajayā saha ||

(The Gandharvas) gave Sūrya to you, Agni, with her bridal ornaments; do you, Agni, give (us)husbands our wife back again with male offspring.

पुनः पत्नीमग्निरदादायुषा सह वर्चसा । दीर्घायुरस्या यः पतिर्जीवाति शरदः शतम् ॥

punaḥ patnīmagniradādāyuṣā saha varcasā | dīrghāyurasyā yaḥ patirjīvāti śaradaḥ śatam ||

Agni gave the wife back again with life and splendour; may he who is her husband enjoying long lifelive a hundred years.

सोमः प्रथमो विविदे गन्धर्वो विविद उत्तरः । तृतीयो अग्निष्टे पतिस्तुरीयस्ते मनुष्यजाः ॥

somaḥ prathamo vivide gandharvo vivida uttaraḥ | tṛtīyo agniṣṭe patisturīyaste manuṣyajāḥ ||

Soma first obtained the bride; the Gandharva obtained her next. Agni was your third husband; yourfourth (husband) is born of man.

सोमो ददद्गन्धर्वाय गन्धर्वो दददग्नये । रयिं च पुत्राँश्चादादग्निर्मह्यमथो इमाम् ॥

somo dadadgandharvāya gandharvo dadadagnaye | rayiṃ ca putrā~ścādādagnirmahyamatho imām ||

Soma gave her to the Gandharva; the Gandharva gave her to Agni; Agni has given her to me andwealth and sons.

इहैव स्तं मा वि यौष्टं विश्वमायुर्व्यश्नुतम् । क्रीऴन्तौ पुत्रैर्नप्तृभिर्मोदमानौ स्वे गृहे ॥

ihaiva staṃ mā vi yauṣṭaṃ viśvamāyurvyaśnutam | krīḻantau putrairnaptṛbhirmodamānau sve gṛhe ||

Abide here together; may you never be separated; live together all your lives, sporting with sons andgrandsons, happy in your own home.

आ नः प्रजां जनयतु प्रजापतिराजरसाय समनक्त्वर्यमा । अदुर्मङ्गलीः पतिलोकमा विश शं नो भव द्विपदे शं चतुष्पदे ॥

ā naḥ prajāṃ janayatu prajāpatirājarasāya samanaktvaryamā | adurmaṅgalīḥ patilokamā viśa śaṃ no bhava dvipade śaṃ catuṣpade ||

May Prajāpati grant us progeny, may Aryaman unite us together until old age; free from all evil omensenter your husband's abode, be the bringer of prosperity to our bipeds and quadrupeds.

अघोरचक्षुरपतिघ्न्येधि शिवा पशुभ्यः सुमनाः सुवर्चाः । वीरसूर्देवकामा स्योना शं नो भव द्विपदे शं चतुष्पदे ॥

aghoracakṣurapatighnyedhi śivā paśubhyaḥ sumanāḥ suvarcāḥ | vīrasūrdevakāmā syonā śaṃ no bhava dvipade śaṃ catuṣpade ||

(Look upon your husband) with no angry eye, be not hostile to your lord, be tender to animals, beamiable, be very glorious; be the mother of males, be devoted to the gods, be the bestower of happiness, be thebringer of prosperity to our bipeds and quadrupeds.

इमां त्वमिन्द्र मीढ्वः सुपुत्रां सुभगां कृणु । दशास्यां पुत्राना धेहि पतिमेकादशं कृधि ॥

imāṃ tvamindra mīḍhvaḥ suputrāṃ subhagāṃ kṛṇu | daśāsyāṃ putrānā dhehi patimekādaśaṃ kṛdhi ||

Indra, showerer, make her the mother of sons, plural asing (to her husband); give her ten sons, make herhusband the eleventh.

सम्राज्ञी श्वशुरे भव सम्राज्ञी श्वश्र्वां भव । ननान्दरि सम्राज्ञी भव सम्राज्ञी अधि देवृषु ॥

samrājñī śvaśure bhava samrājñī śvaśrvāṃ bhava | nanāndari samrājñī bhava samrājñī adhi devṛṣu ||

Be a queen to your father-in-law, be a queen to your mother-in-law, be a queen to your husband'ssister, be a queen to your husband's brother.

समञ्जन्तु विश्वे देवाः समापो हृदयानि नौ । सं मातरिश्वा सं धाता समु देष्ट्री दधातु नौ ॥

samañjantu viśve devāḥ samāpo hṛdayāni nau | saṃ mātariśvā saṃ dhātā samu deṣṭrī dadhātu nau ||

May the universal gods unite both our hearts; may the waters unite them; may Mātariśvan, Dhātāand the bountiful (Sarasvatī) unite both our hearts.
