[rv-10-64] • 17 श्लोकाः

कथा देवानां कतमस्य यामनि सुमन्तु नाम शृण्वतां मनामहे । को मृऴाति कतमो नो मयस्करत्कतम ऊती अभ्या ववर्तति ॥

kathā devānāṃ katamasya yāmani sumantu nāma śṛṇvatāṃ manāmahe | ko mṛḻāti katamo no mayaskaratkatama ūtī abhyā vavartati ||

In what manner, and of which of the gods, who hear (our praises) at the sacrifice, may we enunciatethe venerable name? Who will show us compassion? Which of them will grant us happiness? Which of themcomes for our protection?

क्रतूयन्ति क्रतवो हृत्सु धीतयो वेनन्ति वेनाः पतयन्त्या दिशः । न मर्डिता विद्यते अन्य एभ्यो देवेषु मे अधि कामा अयंसत ॥

kratūyanti kratavo hṛtsu dhītayo venanti venāḥ patayantyā diśaḥ | na marḍitā vidyate anya ebhyo deveṣu me adhi kāmā ayaṃsata ||

The desires cherished in my heart strive to offer worship; (our) wishes long for (the gods) andexpressed (by us) go forth to (the gods); no other bestower of happiness exists except them; upon the gods aremy desire concentrated.

नरा वा शंसं पूषणमगोह्यमग्निं देवेद्धमभ्यर्चसे गिरा । सूर्यामासा चन्द्रमसा यमं दिवि त्रितं वातमुषसमक्तुमश्विना ॥

narā vā śaṃsaṃ pūṣaṇamagohyamagniṃ deveddhamabhyarcase girā | sūryāmāsā candramasā yamaṃ divi tritaṃ vātamuṣasamaktumaśvinā ||

Adore with praises Nārāśaṃsa and Pūṣan, and the unapproachable Agni kindled by the devoutAśvins.

कथा कविस्तुवीरवान्कया गिरा बृहस्पतिर्वावृधते सुवृक्तिभिः । अज एकपात्सुहवेभिॠक्वभिरहिः शृणोतु बुध्न्यो हवीमनि ॥

kathā kavistuvīravānkayā girā bṛhaspatirvāvṛdhate suvṛktibhiḥ | aja ekapātsuhavebhiṝkvabhirahiḥ śṛṇotu budhnyo havīmani ||

How is the sage(Agni) adored by multitudes, and by what praises? Bṛhaspati is magnified with sacredhymns; Aja, walking alone, is magnified with solemn invocations and prayers; may Ahirbudhnya hear us at theseason of invocation.

दक्षस्य वादिते जन्मनि व्रते राजाना मित्रावरुणा विवाससि । अतूर्तपन्थाः पुरुरथो अर्यमा सप्तहोता विषुरूपेषु जन्मसु ॥

dakṣasya vādite janmani vrate rājānā mitrāvaruṇā vivāsasi | atūrtapanthāḥ pururatho aryamā saptahotā viṣurūpeṣu janmasu ||

At the birth of Dakṣa, at his sacred rite, you, Aditi, worshipped the royal Mitra and Varuṇa at thesacred rite. Aryaman, whose course is not hurried, the giver of delight to many, having seven ministering (rays),(proceeds) in his multiform births.

ते नो अर्वन्तो हवनश्रुतो हवं विश्वे शृण्वन्तु वाजिनो मितद्रवः । सहस्रसा मेधसाताविव त्मना महो ये धनं समिथेषु जभ्रिरे ॥

te no arvanto havanaśruto havaṃ viśve śṛṇvantu vājino mitadravaḥ | sahasrasā medhasātāviva tmanā maho ye dhanaṃ samitheṣu jabhrire ||

May those universal horses (of the deities), who listen to invocations, who are vigorous, swiftroadsters, hear our summons; they who spontaneously are the givers of thousands, as if at sacrifice; they whohave won great wealth in battles.

प्र वो वायुं रथयुजं पुरंधिं स्तोमैः कृणुध्वं सख्याय पूषणम् । ते हि देवस्य सवितुः सवीमनि क्रतुं सचन्ते सचितः सचेतसः ॥

pra vo vāyuṃ rathayujaṃ puraṃdhiṃ stomaiḥ kṛṇudhvaṃ sakhyāya pūṣaṇam | te hi devasya savituḥ savīmani kratuṃ sacante sacitaḥ sacetasaḥ ||

Importune, (worshippers), with praises, Vāyu, harnessing his chariot, and Purandhi and Pūṣan fortheir friendship, for these considerate and consentient deities, attend the sacrifice upon the birth of Savitā.

त्रिः सप्त सस्रा नद्यो महीरपो वनस्पतीन्पर्वताँ अग्निमूतये । कृशानुमस्तॄन्तिष्यं सधस्थ आ रुद्रं रुद्रेषु रुद्रियं हवामहे ॥

triḥ sapta sasrā nadyo mahīrapo vanaspatīnparvatā~ agnimūtaye | kṛśānumastṝntiṣyaṃ sadhastha ā rudraṃ rudreṣu rudriyaṃ havāmahe ||

We invoke for protection the thrice seven flowing rivers, (their) great waters, the trees, the mountains,Agni, Kṛśānu, the archers, and Tiṣya, to the assembly; (we invoke) Rudra, worthy of the praise of the Rudras,for the good of the praisers.

सरस्वती सरयुः सिन्धुरूर्मिभिर्महो महीरवसा यन्तु वक्षणीः । देवीरापो मातरः सूदयित्न्वो घृतवत्पयो मधुमन्नो अर्चत ॥

sarasvatī sarayuḥ sindhurūrmibhirmaho mahīravasā yantu vakṣaṇīḥ | devīrāpo mātaraḥ sūdayitnvo ghṛtavatpayo madhumanno arcata ||

May the very great rivers, Sarasvatī, Sarayu, Sindhu, come with their waves for (our) protection; maythe divine maternal animating waters grant us their water mixed with butter and honey.

उत माता बृहद्दिवा शृणोतु नस्त्वष्टा देवेभिर्जनिभिः पिता वचः । ऋभुक्षा वाजो रथस्पतिर्भगो रण्वः शंसः शशमानस्य पातु नः ॥

uta mātā bṛhaddivā śṛṇotu nastvaṣṭā devebhirjanibhiḥ pitā vacaḥ | ṛbhukṣā vājo rathaspatirbhago raṇvaḥ śaṃsaḥ śaśamānasya pātu naḥ ||

May the bright shining mother (of the gods) hear us; may father Tvaṣṭā, with the gods, and theirwives, (hear our) words; may Ṛbhukṣan, Vāja, Rathaspati, Bhaga, may the joyous adorable (company of theMaruts) protect us their praisers.

रण्वः संदृष्टौ पितुमाँ इव क्षयो भद्रा रुद्राणां मरुतामुपस्तुतिः । गोभिः ष्याम यशसो जनेष्वा सदा देवास इऴया सचेमहि ॥

raṇvaḥ saṃdṛṣṭau pitumā~ iva kṣayo bhadrā rudrāṇāṃ marutāmupastutiḥ | gobhiḥ ṣyāma yaśaso janeṣvā sadā devāsa iḻayā sacemahi ||

plural asant of aspect (is troop of Maruts), like a house well stored with provisions; fortunate is the favourof the Maruts, the sons of Rudra; may we (thereby) be famed among men for cattle, and so, gods, ever approach(you) with sacrificial food.

यां मे धियं मरुत इन्द्र देवा अददात वरुण मित्र यूयम् । तां पीपयत पयसेव धेनुं कुविद्गिरो अधि रथे वहाथ ॥

yāṃ me dhiyaṃ maruta indra devā adadāta varuṇa mitra yūyam | tāṃ pīpayata payaseva dhenuṃ kuvidgiro adhi rathe vahātha ||

Maruts, Indra, gods, Varuṇa and Mitra, reward the worship, which you have given as (men fatten) the(newly-delivered) cow with milk, you have repeatedly put my praises on your car.

कुविदङ्ग प्रति यथा चिदस्य नः सजात्यस्य मरुतो बुबोधथ । नाभा यत्र प्रथमं संनसामहे तत्र जामित्वमदितिर्दधातु नः ॥

kuvidaṅga prati yathā cidasya naḥ sajātyasya maruto bubodhatha | nābhā yatra prathamaṃ saṃnasāmahe tatra jāmitvamaditirdadhātu naḥ ||

Maruts, repeatedly acknowledge us, so that (you may make us the objects) of this relationship; andmay Aditi grant us affinity (with men) on the navel of the earth, where we first assemble (to offer oblations).

ते हि द्यावापृथिवी मातरा मही देवी देवाञ्जन्मना यज्ञिये इतः । उभे बिभृत उभयं भरीमभिः पुरू रेतांसि पितृभिश्च सिञ्चतः ॥

te hi dyāvāpṛthivī mātarā mahī devī devāñjanmanā yajñiye itaḥ | ubhe bibhṛta ubhayaṃ bharīmabhiḥ purū retāṃsi pitṛbhiśca siñcataḥ ||

They, two, the maternal heaven and earth, mighty, divine, adorable, attain to the gods upon their birth;they both cherish the two (races, human and divine) (gods), they shed abundant moisture.

वि षा होत्रा विश्वमश्नोति वार्यं बृहस्पतिररमतिः पनीयसी । ग्रावा यत्र मधुषुदुच्यते बृहदवीवशन्त मतिभिर्मनीषिणः ॥

vi ṣā hotrā viśvamaśnoti vāryaṃ bṛhaspatiraramatiḥ panīyasī | grāvā yatra madhuṣuducyate bṛhadavīvaśanta matibhirmanīṣiṇaḥ ||

That voice of invocation, the protectress of the mighty, never ceasing, the panegyrist (of the gods),the pious, by their praises, make the god desirous (of the sacrifice).

एवा कविस्तुवीरवाँ ऋतज्ञा द्रविणस्युर्द्रविणसश्चकानः । उक्थेभिरत्र मतिभिश्च विप्रोऽपीपयद्गयो दिव्यानि जन्म ॥

evā kavistuvīravā~ ṛtajñā draviṇasyurdraviṇasaścakānaḥ | ukthebhiratra matibhiśca vipro'pīpayadgayo divyāni janma ||

The pious sage, Gaya, eloquent in laudation, conversant with sacred rites, wishing for wealth, eagerfor wealth, propitiates the celestial people with prayers and praises.

एवा प्लतेः सूनुरवीवृधद्वो विश्व आदित्या अदिते मनीषी । ईशानासो नरो अमर्त्येनास्तावि जनो दिव्यो गयेन ॥

evā plateḥ sūnuravīvṛdhadvo viśva ādityā adite manīṣī | īśānāso naro amartyenāstāvi jano divyo gayena ||

Universal deities and Aditi, thus has the prudent son of plural ti magnified you; the celestial people, theimmortal (company of the gods) through whom (when praised) men become the bonds (of wealth), have beenglorified by Gaya.
