[rv-10-10] • 14 श्लोकाः

ओ चित्सखायं सख्या ववृत्यां तिरः पुरू चिदर्णवं जगन्वान् । पितुर्नपातमा दधीत वेधा अधि क्षमि प्रतरं दीध्यानः ॥

o citsakhāyaṃ sakhyā vavṛtyāṃ tiraḥ purū cidarṇavaṃ jaganvān | piturnapātamā dadhīta vedhā adhi kṣami prataraṃ dīdhyānaḥ ||

(Yami speaks). I invite my friend to friendship, having come over the vast and desert ocean; mayVedhas, after reflecting, plural ce in the earth the offsprig (of you) the father, edowed with excellent qualities.

न ते सखा सख्यं वष्ट्येतत्सलक्ष्मा यद्विषुरूपा भवाति । महस्पुत्रासो असुरस्य वीरा दिवो धर्तार उर्विया परि ख्यन् ॥

na te sakhā sakhyaṃ vaṣṭyetatsalakṣmā yadviṣurūpā bhavāti | mahasputrāso asurasya vīrā divo dhartāra urviyā pari khyan ||

(Yama speaks). Your friend desires not this friendship, for although of one origin, she is of differentform; the hero sons of the great asura (are) the upholders of heaven, enjoying vast renown.

उशन्ति घा ते अमृतास एतदेकस्य चित्त्यजसं मर्त्यस्य । नि ते मनो मनसि धाय्यस्मे जन्युः पतिस्तन्वमा विविश्याः ॥

uśanti ghā te amṛtāsa etadekasya cittyajasaṃ martyasya | ni te mano manasi dhāyyasme janyuḥ patistanvamā viviśyāḥ ||

(Yami speaks). The immortals take plural asure in (a union) like this which is forbidden to every mortal; letyour mind then concur with mine, and as the progenitor (of all) was the husband (of his daughter), do you enjoymy person n.

न यत्पुरा चकृमा कद्ध नूनमृता वदन्तो अनृतं रपेम । गन्धर्वो अप्स्वप्या च योषा सा नो नाभिः परमं जामि तन्नौ ॥

na yatpurā cakṛmā kaddha nūnamṛtā vadanto anṛtaṃ rapema | gandharvo apsvapyā ca yoṣā sā no nābhiḥ paramaṃ jāmi tannau ||

(Yama speak). We have not done what was done formerly; for how can we who speak truth, utter nowthat which is untrue? Gandharva (the sun) was in the watery (firmament), and the water was his bride. She is ourcommon hence our near affinity.

गर्भे नु नौ जनिता दम्पती कर्देवस्त्वष्टा सविता विश्वरूपः । नकिरस्य प्र मिनन्ति व्रतानि वेद नावस्य पृथिवी उत द्यौः ॥

garbhe nu nau janitā dampatī kardevastvaṣṭā savitā viśvarūpaḥ | nakirasya pra minanti vratāni veda nāvasya pṛthivī uta dyauḥ ||

(Yami speaks). The divine omniform genitive rator Tvaṣṭā, the progenitor, made us two husband andwife, even in the womb: none frustrate his undertaking; earth and heaven are conscious of this our (union).

को अस्य वेद प्रथमस्याह्नः क ईं ददर्श क इह प्र वोचत् । बृहन्मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धाम कदु ब्रव आहनो वीच्या नॄन् ॥

ko asya veda prathamasyāhnaḥ ka īṃ dadarśa ka iha pra vocat | bṛhanmitrasya varuṇasya dhāma kadu brava āhano vīcyā nṝn ||

(Yama speaks). Who knows anything of this (his) first day (of existence)? Who has beheld it? Whohas here revealed it? The dwelling of Mitra and of Varuṇa is vast. What say you, who punishes men with hell?

यमस्य मा यम्यं काम आगन्त्समाने योनौ सहशेय्याय । जायेव पत्ये तन्वं रिरिच्यां वि चिद्वृहेव रथ्येव चक्रा ॥

yamasya mā yamyaṃ kāma āgantsamāne yonau sahaśeyyāya | jāyeva patye tanvaṃ riricyāṃ vi cidvṛheva rathyeva cakrā ||

(Yami speaks). The desire of Yama has approached me Yamī, to lie with him in the same bed; I willabandon my person n as a wife to her husband; let us exert ourselves in union like the two wheels of a wagon.

न तिष्ठन्ति न नि मिषन्त्येते देवानां स्पश इह ये चरन्ति । अन्येन मदाहनो याहि तूयं तेन वि वृह रथ्येव चक्रा ॥

na tiṣṭhanti na ni miṣantyete devānāṃ spaśa iha ye caranti | anyena madāhano yāhi tūyaṃ tena vi vṛha rathyeva cakrā ||

(Yama speaks). The spies of the gods, which wander upon earth, never stop, never close their eyeṣAssociate quickly, destructress, with some other than with me, and exert yourselves in union, like the two wheelsof a wagon.

रात्रीभिरस्मा अहभिर्दशस्येत्सूर्यस्य चक्षुर्मुहुरुन्मिमीयात् । दिवा पृथिव्या मिथुना सबन्धू यमीर्यमस्य बिभृयादजामि ॥

rātrībhirasmā ahabhirdaśasyetsūryasya cakṣurmuhurunmimīyāt | divā pṛthivyā mithunā sabandhū yamīryamasya bibhṛyādajāmi ||

(Yami speaks). To him (Yam) let every worshipper sacrifice both day and night, on him let the eye ofthe Sun repeatedly rise; (for him may) the kindred pair (day and night unite) with heaven and earth. Yama willadhere to the non- affinity of Yama.

आ घा ता गच्छानुत्तरा युगानि यत्र जामयः कृणवन्नजामि । उप बर्बृहि वृषभाय बाहुमन्यमिच्छस्व सुभगे पतिं मत् ॥

ā ghā tā gacchānuttarā yugāni yatra jāmayaḥ kṛṇavannajāmi | upa barbṛhi vṛṣabhāya bāhumanyamicchasva subhage patiṃ mat ||

(Yama speaks). The subsequent ages will come, when sisters will choose one who is not a brother (asa husband); therefore, auspicious one, choose another husband than me, and make your arm a pillow for yourmate.

किं भ्रातासद्यदनाथं भवाति किमु स्वसा यन्निॠतिर्निगच्छात् । काममूता बह्वेतद्रपामि तन्वा मे तन्वं सं पिपृग्धि ॥

kiṃ bhrātāsadyadanāthaṃ bhavāti kimu svasā yanniṝtirnigacchāt | kāmamūtā bahvetadrapāmi tanvā me tanvaṃ saṃ pipṛgdhi ||

(Yami speaks). Is he a brother whose sister has no lord? Is she a sister (whose brother) misfortuneapproaches? Overcome by desire, I strongly urge this one request; unite your person n with mine.

न वा उ ते तन्वा तन्वं सं पपृच्यां पापमाहुर्यः स्वसारं निगच्छात् । अन्येन मत्प्रमुदः कल्पयस्व न ते भ्राता सुभगे वष्ट्येतत् ॥

na vā u te tanvā tanvaṃ saṃ papṛcyāṃ pāpamāhuryaḥ svasāraṃ nigacchāt | anyena matpramudaḥ kalpayasva na te bhrātā subhage vaṣṭyetat ||

(Yama speaks). I will not unite my person n with yours; they call him who approaches a sister, a sinneṛEnjoy plural asure with some other than me; your brother, auspicious one, has no such desire.

बतो बतासि यम नैव ते मनो हृदयं चाविदाम । अन्या किल त्वां कक्ष्येव युक्तं परि ष्वजाते लिबुजेव वृक्षम् ॥

bato batāsi yama naiva te mano hṛdayaṃ cāvidāma | anyā kila tvāṃ kakṣyeva yuktaṃ pari ṣvajāte libujeva vṛkṣam ||

(Yami speaks). Alas, Yama, you are feeble; we understand not your mind or your heart. Some otherfemale embraces you as a girth a horse, or as a creeper a tree.

अन्यमू षु त्वं यम्यन्य उ त्वां परि ष्वजाते लिबुजेव वृक्षम् । तस्य वा त्वं मन इच्छा स वा तवाधा कृणुष्व संविदं सुभद्राम् ॥

anyamū ṣu tvaṃ yamyanya u tvāṃ pari ṣvajāte libujeva vṛkṣam | tasya vā tvaṃ mana icchā sa vā tavādhā kṛṇuṣva saṃvidaṃ subhadrām ||

(Yama speaks). Do you, Yamī, embrace another; and let another embrace you as a creeper a tree;seek his affection, let him seek you; and make a happy union.
