[rv-1-33] • 15 श्लोकाः

एतायामोप गव्यन्त इन्द्रमस्माकं सु प्रमतिं वावृधाति । अनामृणः कुविदादस्य रायो गवां केतं परमावर्जते नः ॥

etāyāmopa gavyanta indramasmākaṃ su pramatiṃ vāvṛdhāti | anāmṛṇaḥ kuvidādasya rāyo gavāṃ ketaṃ paramāvarjate naḥ ||

Come, let us get to Indra, (to recover our stolen cattle), for he, devoid of malice, exhilarates our minds; thereupon he will bestow upon us perfect knowledge of this wealth, (which consists) of kine.

उपेदहं धनदामप्रतीतं जुष्टां न श्येनो वसतिं पतामि । इन्द्रं नमस्यन्नुपमेभिरर्कैर्यः स्तोतृभ्यो हव्यो अस्ति यामन् ॥

upedahaṃ dhanadāmapratītaṃ juṣṭāṃ na śyeno vasatiṃ patāmi | indraṃ namasyannupamebhirarkairyaḥ stotṛbhyo havyo asti yāman ||

I fly, like a hawk to its cherished nest, to that Indra who is to be invoked by his worshipper in battle, glorifying with excellent hymns, him who is invincible and the giver of wealth.

नि सर्वसेन इषुधीँरसक्त समर्यो गा अजति यस्य वष्टि । चोष्कूयमाण इन्द्र भूरि वामं मा पणिर्भूरस्मदधि प्रवृद्ध ॥

ni sarvasena iṣudhī~rasakta samaryo gā ajati yasya vaṣṭi | coṣkūyamāṇa indra bhūri vāmaṃ mā paṇirbhūrasmadadhi pravṛddha ||

The commander fo the whole host has bound his quiver (on his back); the lord drives the cattle (to the dwelling) of whom he plural ases. Mighty Indra, bestowing upon us abundant wealth, take not advantage of us like a dealer.

वधीर्हि दस्युं धनिनं घनेनँ एकश्चरन्नुपशाकेभिरिन्द्र । धनोरधि विषुणक्ते व्यायन्नयज्वानः सनकाः प्रेतिमीयुः ॥

vadhīrhi dasyuṃ dhaninaṃ ghanena~ ekaścarannupaśākebhirindra | dhanoradhi viṣuṇakte vyāyannayajvānaḥ sanakāḥ pretimīyuḥ ||

Verily, Indra, you have slain the wealthy barbarian with your bold; your, singly assailing (him), although with auxiliaries (the Maruts) at hand. Perceiving the impending manifold destructiveness of your bow, they, the Sanakas, the neglecters of sacrifice, perished.

परा चिच्छीर्षा ववृजुस्त इन्द्रायज्वानो यज्वभिः स्पर्धमानाः । प्र यद्दिवो हरिवः स्थातरुग्र निरव्रताँ अधमो रोदस्योः ॥

parā cicchīrṣā vavṛjusta indrāyajvāno yajvabhiḥ spardhamānāḥ | pra yaddivo harivaḥ sthātarugra niravratā~ adhamo rodasyoḥ ||

The neglecters of sacrifice, contending with the sacrificers, Indra, fled with averted faces. Indra, fierce, unyielding, lord of steeds, (they appeared) when you did blow the disregarders of religion from off the heaven, and earth and sky.

अयुयुत्सन्ननवद्यस्य सेनामयातयन्त क्षितयो नवग्वाः । वृषायुधो न वध्रयो निरष्टाः प्रवद्भिरिन्द्राच्चितयन्त आयन् ॥

ayuyutsannanavadyasya senāmayātayanta kṣitayo navagvāḥ | vṛṣāyudho na vadhrayo niraṣṭāḥ pravadbhirindrāccitayanta āyan ||

(The adherants of Vṛtra) encountered the army of the irreproachable (Indra); men of holy lives encouraged him. Scattered before him, conscious (of their inferiority), like the emasculated contending with men, they fled by precipitous paths.

त्वमेतान्रुदतो जक्षतश्चायोधयो रजस इन्द्र पारे । अवादहो दिव आ दस्युमुच्चा प्र सुन्वतः स्तुवतः शंसमावः ॥

tvametānrudato jakṣataścāyodhayo rajasa indra pāre | avādaho diva ā dasyumuccā pra sunvataḥ stuvataḥ śaṃsamāvaḥ ||

You have destroyed them, Indra, whether weeping or laughing, on the farthest verge of the sky; you have consumed the robber, (having dragged him) from heaven, and have received the praises of the worshipper, praising you and offering libations.

चक्राणासः परीणहं पृथिव्या हिरण्येन मणिना शुम्भमानाः । न हिन्वानासस्तितिरुस्त इन्द्रं परि स्पशो अदधात्सूर्येण ॥

cakrāṇāsaḥ parīṇahaṃ pṛthivyā hiraṇyena maṇinā śumbhamānāḥ | na hinvānāsastitirusta indraṃ pari spaśo adadhātsūryeṇa ||

Decorated with gold and jewels, they were spreading over the circuit of the earth; but mighty as they were, they triumphed not over Indra; he dispersed them with the (rising) sun.

परि यदिन्द्र रोदसी उभे अबुभोजीर्महिना विश्वतः सीम् । अमन्यमानाँ अभि मन्यमानैर्निर्ब्रह्मभिरधमो दस्युमिन्द्र ॥

pari yadindra rodasī ubhe abubhojīrmahinā viśvataḥ sīm | amanyamānā~ abhi manyamānairnirbrahmabhiradhamo dasyumindra ||

Indra, as you enjoy both heaven and earth, investing the universe with your magnitude, you have blown away the robber with the prayers which are repeated on behalf of those who do not comprehend them.

न ये दिवः पृथिव्या अन्तमापुर्न मायाभिर्धनदां पर्यभूवन् । युजं वज्रं वृषभश्चक्र इन्द्रो निर्ज्योतिषा तमसो गा अदुक्षत् ॥

na ye divaḥ pṛthivyā antamāpurna māyābhirdhanadāṃ paryabhūvan | yujaṃ vajraṃ vṛṣabhaścakra indro nirjyotiṣā tamaso gā adukṣat ||

When the waters descended not upon the ends of the earth, and overspread not that giver of affluence with its productions, then Indra, the showerer, grasped his bolt, and with its brightness milked out the waters from the darkness.

अनु स्वधामक्षरन्नापो अस्यावर्धत मध्य आ नाव्यानाम् । सध्रीचीनेन मनसा तमिन्द्र ओजिष्ठेन हन्मनाहन्नभि द्यून् ॥

anu svadhāmakṣarannāpo asyāvardhata madhya ā nāvyānām | sadhrīcīnena manasā tamindra ojiṣṭhena hanmanāhannabhi dyūn ||

The waters flowed to provide the food of Indra, but (Vṛtra) increased in the midst of the navigable (rivers); then Indra, with his fatal and powerful shaft, slew Vṛtra, whose thought were ever turned towards him.

न्याविध्यदिलीबिशस्य दृऴ्हा वि शृङ्गिणमभिनच्छुष्णमिन्द्रः । यावत्तरो मघवन्यावदोजो वज्रेण शत्रुमवधीः पृतन्युम् ॥

nyāvidhyadilībiśasya dṛḻhā vi śṛṅgiṇamabhinacchuṣṇamindraḥ | yāvattaro maghavanyāvadojo vajreṇa śatrumavadhīḥ pṛtanyum ||

Indra set free (the waters) obstructed by (Vṛtra), when sleeping in the caves of the earth, and slew the horned dryer up (of the world). You, Maghavan, with equal swiftness and strength, did kill with your thunderbolt the enemy defying you to battle.

अभि सिध्मो अजिगादस्य शत्रून्वि तिग्मेन वृषभेणा पुरोऽभेत् । सं वज्रेणासृजद्वृत्रमिन्द्रः प्र स्वां मतिमतिरच्छाशदानः ॥

abhi sidhmo ajigādasya śatrūnvi tigmena vṛṣabheṇā puro'bhet | saṃ vajreṇāsṛjadvṛtramindraḥ pra svāṃ matimatiracchāśadānaḥ ||

The weapon of Indra fell upon his adversaries; with his sharp and excellent (shaft) he destroyed their cities; he then reached Vṛtra with his thunderbolt, and (by) slaying him, exhilarated his mind.

आवः कुत्समिन्द्र यस्मिञ्चाकन्प्रावो युध्यन्तं वृषभं दशद्युम् । शफच्युतो रेणुर्नक्षत द्यामुच्छ्वैत्रेयो नृषाह्याय तस्थौ ॥

āvaḥ kutsamindra yasmiñcākanprāvo yudhyantaṃ vṛṣabhaṃ daśadyum | śaphacyuto reṇurnakṣata dyāmucchvaitreyo nṛṣāhyāya tasthau ||

You, Indra, have protected Kutsa, grateful for his praises; you have defended the excellent Daśadyu engaged in battle; the dust of your courser's hoofs ascended to heaven; the son of Śvita, (through your favour), rose up, to be again unborn by men.

आवः शमं वृषभं तुग्र्यासु क्षेत्रजेषे मघवञ्छ्वित्र्यं गाम् । ज्योक्चिदत्र तस्थिवांसो अक्रञ्छत्रूयतामधरा वेदनाकः ॥

āvaḥ śamaṃ vṛṣabhaṃ tugryāsu kṣetrajeṣe maghavañchvitryaṃ gām | jyokcidatra tasthivāṃso akrañchatrūyatāmadharā vedanākaḥ ||

You have protected, Maghavan, the excellent son of Śvitā, when combating for his lands, and encouraged (by you) when immersed in water; do you inflict sharp pains on those of hostile minds, who have long stood (in enmity) against us.
