[rv-1-145] • 5 श्लोकाः

तं पृच्छता स जगामा स वेद स चिकित्वाँ ईयते सा न्वीयते । तस्मिन्त्सन्ति प्रशिषस्तस्मिन्निष्टयः स वाजस्य शवसः शुष्मिणस्पतिः ॥

taṃ pṛcchatā sa jagāmā sa veda sa cikitvā~ īyate sā nvīyate | tasmintsanti praśiṣastasminniṣṭayaḥ sa vājasya śavasaḥ śuṣmiṇaspatiḥ ||

Ask (of Agni what you desire), for he goes (everywhere), he knows (all things); possessed of intelligence, he proceeds (to ascertain what is to be done), and is had recourse to (by his worshippers); for in him is the power of restraining (unreasonable desires) in him (is the power of granting) enjoyment; he is the giver of food and of strength; the protector of the mighty.

तमित्पृच्छन्ति न सिमो वि पृच्छति स्वेनेव धीरो मनसा यदग्रभीत् । न मृष्यते प्रथमं नापरं वचोऽस्य क्रत्वा सचते अप्रदृपितः ॥

tamitpṛcchanti na simo vi pṛcchati sveneva dhīro manasā yadagrabhīt | na mṛṣyate prathamaṃ nāparaṃ vaco'sya kratvā sacate apradṛpitaḥ ||

They ask of Agni, but no one asks improperly; for a sensible man (replies to solicitation) as he has determined in his own mind; Agni tolerates not a speech that anticipates (his reply), nor endures a rejoinder; he who is devoid of arrogance is favoured by his protection.

तमिद्गच्छन्ति जुह्वस्तमर्वतीर्विश्वान्येकः शृणवद्वचांसि मे । पुरुप्रैषस्ततुरिर्यज्ञसाधनोऽच्छिद्रोतिः शिशुरादत्त सं रभः ॥

tamidgacchanti juhvastamarvatīrviśvānyekaḥ śṛṇavadvacāṃsi me | purupraiṣastaturiryajñasādhano'cchidrotiḥ śiśurādatta saṃ rabhaḥ ||

To him the (sacrificial) ladles are directed; to him (our) praises are addressed; he alone hears all my prayers; be is the instrumental gator of many, the transporter (across the world), the instrumental ument of sacrifice, the unintermitting preserver (of mankind), and (genitive le as) an infant; provided with the preparations (of sacrifice), he accepts libations.

उपस्थायं चरति यत्समारत सद्यो जातस्तत्सार युज्येभिः । अभि श्वान्तं मृशते नान्द्ये मुदे यदीं गच्छन्त्युशतीरपिष्ठितम् ॥

upasthāyaṃ carati yatsamārata sadyo jātastatsāra yujyebhiḥ | abhi śvāntaṃ mṛśate nāndye mude yadīṃ gacchantyuśatīrapiṣṭhitam ||

When (the priest) proceeds to effect his development, he is (at once) manifested; and as soon as engendered, is associated with his objects; he provides for the gratification (of his worshipper), plural cidly engaged in the agreeable (rite), when the (oblations) that desire (his acceptance) reach him present (at the sacrifice).

स ईं मृगो अप्यो वनर्गुरुप त्वच्युपमस्यां नि धायि । व्यब्रवीद्वयुना मर्त्येभ्योऽग्निर्विद्वाँ ऋतचिद्धि सत्यः ॥

sa īṃ mṛgo apyo vanargurupa tvacyupamasyāṃ ni dhāyi | vyabravīdvayunā martyebhyo'gnirvidvā~ ṛtaciddhi satyaḥ ||

He, the searcher, the accessible, the dweller in woods, has been plural ced (amidst the fuel), as in the similitude of (an enveloping) skin; the wise Agni, the appreciater of sacrifice, the veracious, has declared to mortals (the knowledge of) their religious duties.
