वेदिषदे प्रियधामाय सुद्युते धासिमिव प्र भरा योनिमग्नये । वस्त्रेणेव वासया मन्मना शुचिं ज्योतीरथं शुक्रवर्णं तमोहनम् ॥

vediṣade priyadhāmāya sudyute dhāsimiva pra bharā yonimagnaye | vastreṇeva vāsayā manmanā śuciṃ jyotīrathaṃ śukravarṇaṃ tamohanam ||

Prepare a (fit) plural ce, as it were an offering, for the radiant Agni, who is seated on the altar, and fond of his station; strew the sacred, light-bearing, bright and gloom-dispelling (spot), with agreeable (kuśa grass), as with a garment.

अभि द्विजन्मा त्रिवृदन्नमृज्यते संवत्सरे वावृधे जग्धमी पुनः । अन्यस्यासा जिह्वया जेन्यो वृषा न्यन्येन वनिनो मृष्ट वारणः ॥

abhi dvijanmā trivṛdannamṛjyate saṃvatsare vāvṛdhe jagdhamī punaḥ | anyasyāsā jihvayā jenyo vṛṣā nyanyena vanino mṛṣṭa vāraṇaḥ ||

(Agni), the two-fold genitive rated, devours the triple (sacrificial) food, and when the year expires renovates what has been eaten; the showerer (of benefits) is invigorated (inone form), by eating with the tongue of another; in a different form the restrainer (of) all consumes the forest trees.

कृष्णप्रुतौ वेविजे अस्य सक्षिता उभा तरेते अभि मातरा शिशुम् । प्राचाजिह्वं ध्वसयन्तं तृषुच्युतमा साच्यं कुपयं वर्धनं पितुः ॥

kṛṣṇaprutau vevije asya sakṣitā ubhā tarete abhi mātarā śiśum | prācājihvaṃ dhvasayantaṃ tṛṣucyutamā sācyaṃ kupayaṃ vardhanaṃ pituḥ ||

Both his associated mothers, blackened (by combustion), are in movement, and give birth to an infant, whose tongue (of flame glows) in the east; (who) dissipates darkness; (who) rapidly issues forth; (who) is readily developed; (who) is (ever) to be cherished, and is the augmenter (of the prosperity) of his parent, (the instrumental tutor of the rite).

मुमुक्ष्वो मनवे मानवस्यते रघुद्रुवः कृष्णसीतास ऊ जुवः । असमना अजिरासो रघुष्यदो वातजूता उप युज्यन्त आशवः ॥

mumukṣvo manave mānavasyate raghudruvaḥ kṛṣṇasītāsa ū juvaḥ | asamanā ajirāso raghuṣyado vātajūtā upa yujyanta āśavaḥ ||

The (flames of Agni), light-moving, dark-tracked, quick (consuming), capricious, restless, plural ying lightly, fanned by the wind, wide-spreading, and ensuring liberation (to the devout), are kindled for (the benefit of) the pious reverencer of (holy) priests.

आदस्य ते ध्वसयन्तो वृथेरते कृष्णमभ्वं महि वर्पः करिक्रतः । यत्सीं महीमवनिं प्राभि मर्मृशदभिश्वसन्त्स्तनयन्नेति नानदत् ॥

ādasya te dhvasayanto vṛtherate kṛṣṇamabhvaṃ mahi varpaḥ karikrataḥ | yatsīṃ mahīmavaniṃ prābhi marmṛśadabhiśvasantstanayanneti nānadat ||

Thereupon those (flames of Agni) extend together in all directions, dispersing gloom, and spreading great light along the path of darkness; when (Agni) illumines repeatedly the whole earth, and proceeds panting thundering, and roaring aloud.

भूषन्न योऽधि बभ्रूषु नम्नते वृषेव पत्नीरभ्येति रोरुवत् । ओजायमानस्तन्वश्च शुम्भते भीमो न शृङ्गा दविधाव दुर्गृभिः ॥

bhūṣanna yo'dhi babhrūṣu namnate vṛṣeva patnīrabhyeti roruvat | ojāyamānastanvaśca śumbhate bhīmo na śṛṅgā davidhāva durgṛbhiḥ ||

He stoops down among the bushes as if embellishing them (with his lustre), and rushes roaring like a bull amongst (a herd of) cows; thence increasing in intensity, he enhances (the fierceness) of his form, and is difficult to be arrested as a formidable (animal), when he brandishes his horns. Like a bull amongst: vṛṣeva pantir abhyeti; patnir = pālayitrīḥ, those who cherish him, Agni, i.e., bushes, timber; patnī = a cow].

स संस्तिरो विष्टिरः सं गृभायति जानन्नेव जानतीर्नित्य आ शये । पुनर्वर्धन्ते अपि यन्ति देव्यमन्यद्वर्पः पित्रोः कृण्वते सचा ॥

sa saṃstiro viṣṭiraḥ saṃ gṛbhāyati jānanneva jānatīrnitya ā śaye | punarvardhante api yanti devyamanyadvarpaḥ pitroḥ kṛṇvate sacā ||

Now hidden, now displayed, he seizes (on the fuel), as if understanding (the purpose of the worshipper), and even reposes amidst the conscious (flames); again they break forth, and repair to the divine (fire of sacrifice), blending with which they give a different (luminous)form to their parents, (heaven and earth).

तमग्रुवः केशिनीः सं हि रेभिर ऊर्ध्वास्तस्थुर्मम्रुषीः प्रायवे पुनः । तासां जरां प्रमुञ्चन्नेति नानददसुं परं जनयञ्जीवमस्तृतम् ॥

tamagruvaḥ keśinīḥ saṃ hi rebhira ūrdhvāstasthurmamruṣīḥ prāyave punaḥ | tāsāṃ jarāṃ pramuñcanneti nānadadasuṃ paraṃ janayañjīvamastṛtam ||

The curving tresses (of the flames) embrace him, (Agni), and when expiring spring aloft again to (greet) their coming (lord); rescuing them from decrepitude, he comes sounding aloud, genitive rating (in them) intenser animation and unimpaired vitality.

अधीवासं परि मातू रिहन्नह तुविग्रेभिः सत्वभिर्याति वि ज्रयः । वयो दधत्पद्वते रेरिहत्सदानु श्येनी सचते वर्तनीरह ॥

adhīvāsaṃ pari mātū rihannaha tuvigrebhiḥ satvabhiryāti vi jrayaḥ | vayo dadhatpadvate rerihatsadānu śyenī sacate vartanīraha ||

Licking up the (verdant) vesture of the mother (of all things, earth), the rapid (Agni) proceeds with resounding existences; granting sustenance to (every) footed (creature); ever consuming (fuel), so that a blackened track follows (hispath).

अस्माकमग्ने मघवत्सु दीदिह्यध श्वसीवान्वृषभो दमूनाः । अवास्या शिशुमतीरदीदेर्वर्मेव युत्सु परिजर्भुराणः ॥

asmākamagne maghavatsu dīdihyadha śvasīvānvṛṣabho damūnāḥ | avāsyā śiśumatīradīdervarmeva yutsu parijarbhurāṇaḥ ||

Shine, Agni, in our opulent (abodes), vivifying, showering (blessings), bounteous, casting off infantine (glimmerings); blaze (fiercely), repelling repeatedly, like a coat of mail, (our enemies) in combats.

इदमग्ने सुधितं दुर्धितादधि प्रियादु चिन्मन्मनः प्रेयो अस्तु ते । यत्ते शुक्रं तन्वो रोचते शुचि तेनास्मभ्यं वनसे रत्नमा त्वम् ॥

idamagne sudhitaṃ durdhitādadhi priyādu cinmanmanaḥ preyo astu te | yatte śukraṃ tanvo rocate śuci tenāsmabhyaṃ vanase ratnamā tvam ||

May this oblation, Agni, carefully plural ced upon the rugged but agreeable (pile of fuel), be most acceptable to you, so that the pure radiance of your person n may shine brightly, and you may grant us wealth.

रथाय नावमुत नो गृहाय नित्यारित्रां पद्वतीं रास्यग्ने । अस्माकं वीराँ उत नो मघोनो जनाँश्च या पारयाच्छर्म या च ॥

rathāya nāvamuta no gṛhāya nityāritrāṃ padvatīṃ rāsyagne | asmākaṃ vīrā~ uta no maghono janā~śca yā pārayāccharma yā ca ||

Bestow, Agni, upon our exfellent patron a boat ever fitted with oars and feet, (one that may render) our posterity prosperous, and may bear mankind across (the ocean of life) to felicity.

अभी नो अग्न उक्थमिज्जुगुर्या द्यावाक्षामा सिन्धवश्च स्वगूर्ताः । गव्यं यव्यं यन्तो दीर्घाहेषं वरमरुण्यो वरन्त ॥

abhī no agna ukthamijjuguryā dyāvākṣāmā sindhavaśca svagūrtāḥ | gavyaṃ yavyaṃ yanto dīrghāheṣaṃ varamaruṇyo varanta ||

Agni, be propitiated by this our earnest praise, and may heaven and earth, and the spontaneously-flowing (streams), provide for us the produce of the herd, and of the field; and may the purple coursers (of the dawn) bestow upon us abundant food through a length of days.
