शास्ता

The presiding deity (idol installed) in the शबरिमल temple.
Birth
शिव fell in love with महाविष्णु in his assumed form as मोहिनी and शास्ता was the result of their union. (Kambarāmāyaṇa, Bālakāṇḍa) . This story occurs in the 8th स्कन्ध of भागवत and the असुर काण्ड of स्कन्द पुराण , but only the स्कन्द पुराण refers to the child by name शास्ता .
Other information
In the battle between इन्द्र and the असुर called शूरपद्म the former deputed शास्ता for the protection of शचीदेवी . (Skanda Purāṇa, Asura Kāṇḍa) .
शास्ता is supposed to have two wives called पुराणा and पुष्कला and a son called सत्यक . (Aṣṭottaraśatakam about Śāstā • also see under Śabarimala) .
