( च्रेअतिओन् ) अग्नि पुराण , Chapter 20 refers to various सर्गस् as follows.

The first creation is that of greatness (महत्व) that is. ब्रह्मा . The second creation is that of तन्मात्रस् called भूतसर्ग . The third is वैकारिकसर्ग also called ऐन्द्रियिकसर्ग . These three kinds of creation are called प्राकृत सृष्टि (natural creation) and that is conscious and intelligent creation. The fourth is मुख्यसर्ग . मुख्यस् mean immovables. The fifth is तिर्यग्योनिसृष्टि . Since it functions side-long it is called तिर्यक्स्रोतस् . The sixth is the creation of ऊर्ध्वस्रोतस् , called देवसर्ग . The seventh is the creation of अर्वाक्स्रोतस् , called मानुषसर्ग . The eighth, अनुग्रहसर्ग , is both सात्त्विच् and तामसिच् . Thus, वैकृतसर्गस् are five in number and प्राकृतसर्गस् three. The ninth सर्ग is the कौमार सर्ग , which is both वैकृत and प्राकृत . The fundamental or root cause of the universe is the above nine creations of ब्रह्मा . प्राकृतसर्ग is of three types, नित्य (eternal), नैमित्तिक (casual) and दैनन्दिन (daily). नित्यसर्ग is the creation after interim deluges.
