He was the second son of प्रतीप . His elder brother was called देवापि , younger one बाल्हीक and his mother सुनन्दा . [mh-1-94-61 ] • [mh-1-95-45 ] .
He was called शन्तनु as things touched by both his hands used to become youthful.
शन्तनु became King as his elder brother देवापि had, as an infant, renounced the throne and left for the forest. [mh-1-94-62 ] • [mh-1-95-45 ]
It was he, who brought to the palace and brought up कृप and कृपी , who were found in the forest as orphans. [mh-1-95-46 ] .
शन्तनु worships यम in his court. [mh-2-8-25 ] .
He attained heaven by doing tapas on Mount आर्चिक . [mh-3-125-19 ] .
He is one of the Kings to be remembered both at dawn and dusk. [mh-13-165-58 ] .
He was absolutely wedded to truth and he possessed great prowess. [mh-1-96-1 ] .
He conducted thousand अश्वमेधस् and hundred राजसूयस् . [mh-1-96-2 ] .
Synonyms used of him in the महाभारत :- भरत , भारतगोप्ता , भरतसत्तम , कौरव्य , कुरुसत्तम , प्रातीप etc.
