शाण्डिल्य

A great maharṣi. Some details about him are given hereunder.
King शतानीक and his wife विष्णुमती , who had no issues approached the maharṣi in great sorrow. As a result of eating rice given by the maharṣi विष्णुमती became the mother of a son, who became in later years famous as emperor सहस्रानीक . (Kathāsaritsāgara, Kathāmukhalambaka, Taraṅga 1) .
A member of युधिष्ठिर 's court. [mh-2-4-17 ] .
He had an ascetic daughter. [mh-9-54-5 ] .
He once opined that the gift of a mere ox-cart was equal to the gift of water in a golden pot. [mh-13-65-19 ] .
He visited भीष्म on his bed of arrows. [mh-12-47-6 ] .
King सुमन्यु once gave the महर्षि plenty of food materials. [mh-13-173-22 ] .
A maharṣi born in the dynasty of कश्यप , son of मरीचि . As अग्नि was born in the family of the maharṣi it came to be called ' शाण्डिल्यगोत्रीय ' (born in the family of Śāṇḍilya) . King Sumanyu once gave him food and other edible things. [mh-13-137-22 ] .
A King, a great devotee of शिव . As a youth he became a philanderer with the result that the honour of women was in jeopardy. The King being a devotee of शिव even यम could not punish him. At last, when शिव came to know of the immorality of his devotee he cursed the King to be turned into a tortoise for thousand years.
A महर्षि , who desired to worship विष्णु not in the Vedic method for which purpose he even wrote a book to propagate non-vedic principles. For the above sinful action he had to live in hell and at last he was born as जमदग्नि of the भृगु dynasty. (Vṛddhahārītasmṛti, 180, 193) .
A महर्षि whose भक्तिसूत्रस् (Aphorisms on devotion) are as famous as those of नारद . He taught भक्ति in a scientific way (by शाण्डिल्य science).
