Wife of Sun ( सूर्य ).

Birth

संज्ञा was the daughter of विश्वकर्मन् according to the विष्णु पुराण (Part 3, Chapter 2) and of त्वष्टा according to महाभारत, आदि पर्व (Chapter 66, Verse 35) . Most of the पुराणस् refer to संज्ञा as the daughter of विश्वकर्मन् .

Separation from husband

संज्ञा lacked the power to put up with the heat of सूर्य . She once went into the forest to perform तपस् after deputing her companion, छाया , to serve her husband. संज्ञा left her three sons मनु , यम , and यमी also in the charge of छाया , who in the guise of संज्ञा served सूर्य . He took her to be his wife and begot three children, शनैश्चर , (another) मनु and तपती of her. छाया once got angry and cursed यम , son of संज्ञा . Then it was that सूर्य realised that she was not his wife. सूर्य felt very sad at this separation from his wife and went to the forest in search of her. He knew, by the power of his meditation, that संज्ञा was doing तपस् in the guise of a mare. Then he assumed the form of a horse and begot of the mare the अश्विनीकुमारस् and रेवन्त . The अश्विनीकुमारस् named नासत्य and दस्र , were born through the mare's ( संज्ञा ) nose. [mh-13-150-17 ] Mahābhārata • Anuśāsana parva .

Reunion

सूर्य brought संज्ञा back with him. She complained to her father विश्वकर्मन् , that life with सूर्य was impossible on account of his excessive heat, and so विश्वकर्मन् ground सूर्य on his drilling machine and reduced his heat. But, only (1/8) of the heat (effulgence) could be so reduced, and it was with that fraction of effulgence that विष्णु 's disc ( चक्र ), शिव 's triśūla (trident), कुबेर 's पुष्पकविमान and सुब्रह्मण्य 's weapon called शक्ति were made.
