शल्य

A king who gave advice and leadership to the कौरवस् . He ruled over the मद्र or बाल्हीक kingdom. माद्री , wife of पाण्डु was शल्य 's sister. Yet, in the great war he stood firmly on the कौरव side and died at कुरुक्षेत्र . The following role he played in the भारत story.
At the instance of भीष्म he gave his sister माद्री in marriage to पाण्डु . [mh-1-112-1 ] .
He was present at the wedding of द्रौपदी in the company of his sons रुक्माङ्गद and रुक्मरथ . [mh-1-185-18 ] .
At the श्वयंवर of द्रौपदी he withdrew from stringing the bow, owning defeat. [mh-1-186-28 ] .
भीम defeated him at the wedding of द्रौपदी . [mh-1-189-23 ]
During his triumphal tour of the west, नकुल befriended his uncle शल्य , and entertained him. [mh-2-32-14 ] .
He participated in युधिष्ठिर 's राजसूय यज्ञ . [mh-2-34-7 ] .
शिशुपाल once opined that शल्य was nobler than श्री कृष्ण . [mh-2-37-14 ] .
He presented a good sword and a golden jar to युधिष्ठिर on the occasion of his coronation. [mh-2-53-9 ] .
When धर्मपुत्र went to हस्तिनापुर to play the game of dice, शल्य was found to have arrived there earlier. [mh-2-58-24 ] .
Before the great war began he visited the पाण्डवस् and blessed them. Moreover he agreed to act as कर्ण 's charioteer and render him impotent so that the पाण्डवस् could become victorious. [mh-5-8-1 ] .
शल्य joined the कौरवस् in the great war with an अक्षौहिणी (a particular division of soldiers). [mh-5-19-16 ] .
शल्य wished that युधिष्ठिर won the war. [mh-6-43-79 ] .
On the first day of the war he fought a duel with युधिष्ठिर . [mh-6-45-28 ] .
शल्य killed उत्तर , the विराट prince. [mh-6-47-35 ] .
He defeated शङ्ख , another विराट prince. [mh-6-49-35 ] .
He fought with धृष्टद्युम्न . [mh-6-62-1 ] .
भीमसेन defeated शल्य . [mh-6-64-27 ] .
He fought with युधिष्ठिर again. [mh-6-71-20 ] .
नकुल and सहदेव attacked शल्य . [mh-6-81-26 ] .
सहदेव defeated शल्य . [mh-6-88-51 ] .
शल्य attacked शिखण्डी . [mh-6-85-27 ] .
In the battle that followed he attacked the whole lot of पाण्डवस् and wounded युधिष्ठिर . [mh-6-105-30 ] .
भीम and अर्जुन fought with शल्य . [mh-6-113-1 ] .
शल्य fought a duel with युधिष्ठिर for the third time. [mh-6-116-40 ] .
He fought with नकुल . [mh-7-14-31 ] .
अभिमन्यु and शल्य fought with each other. [mh-7-14-78 ] .
Afterwards in a club-fight with भीम , शल्य got defeated. [mh-7-15-1 ] .
He fought again with युधिष्ठिर . [mh-7-25-15 ] .
In the fight with अभिमन्यु he fell down unconscious. [mh-7-37-38 ] .
अभिमन्यु defeated him again. [mh-7-48-14 ] .
He fought for the fifth time with युधिष्ठिर . [mh-7-26-99 ]
Afterwards he clashed with अर्जुन as the protector of जयद्रथ . [mh-7-145-9 ] .
He killed शतानीक , brother of विराट . [mh-7-137-30 ] .
When द्रोण was killed शल्य ran away from the battlefield. [mh-7-193-11 ] .
श्रुतकीर्ति attacked शल्य . [mh-8-13-10 ] .
दुर्योधन insisted upon शल्य acting as charioteer of कर्ण . At first शल्य got angry about the suggestion, but finally he took up the charioteership. [mh-8-32-1 ] .
As the charioteer of कर्ण शल्य cried down the former and praised अर्जुन . [mh-8-37-33 ] .
कर्ण threatened to kill शल्य . [mh-8-40-1 ] .
शल्य cried down कर्ण by relating to him the story of the swan and the crow. [mh-8-41-1 ] .
When भीम wanted to cut off कर्ण 's tongue शल्य reminded him of अर्जुन 's vow and thus made भीम retract from his plan. [mh-8-50-1 ] Dākṣiṇātyapāṭha .
When कर्ण attempted to kill नकुल , सहदेव and युधिष्ठिर , शल्य prevented him from doing so. [mh-8-63-21 ] .
He consoled कर्ण , who got alarmed by the prowess of भीम . [mh-8-84-8 ] .
शल्य comforted दुर्योधन , who grieved over the death of कर्ण . [mh-8-92-10 ] .
As desired by दुर्योधन , he assumed charge over the army as its commander-in-chief. [mh-9-6-28 ] .
He fought a fierce battle with भीम and धर्मपुत्र . [mh-9-11-1 ] • [mh-9-12-1 ] .
धर्मपुत्र defeated शल्य . [mh-9-16-63 ] .
In the battle that followed, शल्य was killed by युधिष्ठिर . [mh-9-17-52 ] .
Among the souls of those killed in battle beckoned to the surface of the गङ्गा , शल्य 's soul also was present. [mh-15-32-10 ] .
संह्लाद , brother of प्रह्लाद and son of हिरण्यकशिपु was another birth of शल्य . [mh-1-67-6 ] .
