One of the seven islands.

General

शाल्मलि island, which is double in extent of प्लक्ष island is surrounded by इक्षुरस (sugar-cane juice) ocean on all four sides of it. There are seven mountains there which produce gems and they are seven boundaries which separate the regions. Just like this, there are also seven rivers there. The seven rivers are योनि , तोया , वितृणा , चन्द्रा , मुक्ता , विमोचनी and निर्वृति . Mere remembrance of the seven rivers is sufficient to annihilate all sins. Here people divided into the four classes live. ब्रह्मिन्स् , क्षत्रियस् वैश्यस् and शूद्रस् here are called कपिलस् , अरुणस् , पीतस् and कृष्णस् . These devout people worship विष्णु in the form of वायु by sublime यज्ञस् . Devas are ever present on this most beautiful island. A tree named साल्मलि which gives mental comfort grows in this island. The island is surrounded on all four sides by an ocean of सुरा (liquor). (Viṣṇu Purāṇa, Part II, Chapter 4)
