शाकल्य
[sakalya] IAST: ŚĀKALYA
A महर्षि in the lineage of gurus (See under Guruparamparā) . He systematised the वेदसंहितास् . It was बादरायणकृष्ण , who became later famous as वेदव्यास , who first arranged in systematic order the वेदसंहितास् . Prominent scholars hold the view that व्यास lived between 1300-1500 B.C. The संहिता text now popular systematised by शाकल्य is called शाकल्य शाखा ( शाकल्य branch). शाकल्य is reported to have saved कश्यप महर्षि once. When king परीक्षित् was cursed that he would die by तक्षक 's poison कश्यप started for his court to save the king from the calamity. But, तक्षक met him on the way and sent him back laden with presents of gems, ornaments etc. People derided कश्यप , who on account of covetousness, retreated from the duty of saving the king's life and non-cooperated with him in every way. In this contingency कश्यप sought the help of शाकल्य , who advised the former to bathe in the sacred तीर्थस् in the rivers गोदावरी and सरस्वती . कश्यप did so and regained his old reputation.
