शक

A particular sect of people or caste. The following information about the शकस् is gathered from the महाभारत .
शकस् were born from the breast of नन्दिनी , वसिष्ठ 's cow. [mh-1-147-36 ] .
भीमसेन , during his triumphal tour of the eastern regions subjugated the शकस् . [mh-2-32-14 ] .
नकुल conquered them. [mh-2-32-14 ] .
King of the शकस् participated in युधिष्ठिर 's राजसूय . [mh-2-51-32 ] .
The पाण्डवस् invited them to take part in the great war. [mh-5-4-15 ] .
They did along with सुदक्षिण , king of काम्बोज , service in दुर्योधन 's army. [mh-5-19-21 ] .
श्री कृष्ण once conquered them. [mh-7-119-45 ] .
कर्ण once defeated them and conquered their country. [mh-8-8-18 ] .
शकस् who were originally क्षत्रियस् were demoted as शूद्रस् as they incurred the displeasure and anger of ब्रह्मिन्स् . [mh-13-33-21 ] .
As the शकस् and the यवनस् had helped the हैहय kings परशुराम , सगर and भरत defeated them in war and drove them off from the country. (Bhāgavata, Navama Skandha) .
