His complexion turned blue owing to the effect of the poison. कर्कोटक gave him a garment by wearing which नल could regain his form. As advised by कर्कोटक , नल went to the palace of ऋतुपर्ण , king of अयोध्या , assuming the name बाहुक . He lived there as the chief charioteer of the king. He had mastered the art " अश्वहृदय " by which he could drive the chariot-horses with astonishing speed. ऋतुपर्ण appointed him as his chief charioteer and gave him two assistants, वार्ष्णेय and जीवल . (ii) ऋतुपर्ण and the second marriage of दमयन्ति
दमयन्ती came to know that नल was living in ऋतुपर्ण 's palace, through the messenger पर्णाद . She sent a secret mesage to अयोध्या through a ब्राह्मण named सुदेव that her second marriage was fixed for the next day and that ऋतुपर्ण should attend the ceremony. ऋतुपर्ण started at once with बाहुक as his charioteer. On the way, ऋतुपर्ण 's cloak happened to fall down from the chariot. At once he asked नल to stop the chariot. But he told him that within a moment, the chariot had covered a distance of one योजन from the place where the cloak fell.
They saw a tree in the forest which was heavily laden with fruit. ऋतुपर्ण was able to tell at a glance, the exact number of leaves and fruits on that tree. He told नल that he was able to do so with the help of the art " अक्षहृदय " and he taught it to नल . In return for it, नल taught the king the art of अश्वहृदय . At last they reached the city of विदर्भ . दमयन्ती managed to recognize नल even in his disguise. ऋतुपर्ण who was happy over the reunion of नल and दमयन्ती returned to अयोध्या on the next day.
