The wife of a sage. There was once a sage named सत्य in the country of विदर्भ . पुष्करधारिणी was the wife of सत्य . सत्य who believed in अहिंसा performed a याग with fruits and roots. It is believed that no याग is perfect if performed without a sacrificial goat. But even his wife for fear of a curse did not object to a याग of the kind.

There was another sage living in that forest in the form of a deer due to a curse and he was a great friend of सत्य . The deer came to the place of the यज्ञ and requested सत्य to kill him as the sacrificial animal to make the याग a success. सत्य did not agree to that but then सावित्रीदेवी appeared in person and compelled him to kill the deer and conduct the याग . With great reluctance सत्य killed the deer and conducted the याग ; but the power of penance of सत्य faded away by that deed of his. Then पुष्करधारिणी performed penance to regain the power of her husband and धर्म appeared in person and blessed सत्य . [mh-12-272-1 ] Mahābhārata • Śānti parva .
