The eldest son of स्वायम्भुव मनु . He had another son named उत्तानपाद and three daughters named आकूति , देवहूति and प्रसूति . The daughters were married to रुचि , कर्दम and दक्ष respectively. (8th Skandha, Devī Bhāgavata) .

प्रियव्रत married बर्हिष्मती daughter of कर्दमप्रजापति . He got of her two daughters named सम्राट् and कुक्षि and ten sons named अग्नीध्र , अग्निबाहु , वपुष्मान् , द्युतिमान् , मेधस् , मेधातिथि , भव्य , सवन , पुत्र and ज्योतिष्मान् . Of these ज्योतिष्मान् was really possessing ज्योतिस् (brilliance). All the sons, मेधस् , अग्निबाहू and पुत्र , were interested in the practice of yoga and were aware of their previous births. प्रियव्रत disributed seven islands to seven of his sons as follows:

जम्बूद्वीप to अग्नीध्र ; प्लक्षद्वीप to मेधातिथि ; शाल्मलीद्वीप to वपुष्मान् ; कुशद्वीप to ज्योतिष्मान् ; क्रौञ्चद्वीप to द्युतिमान् ; शाकद्वीप to भव्य ; and पुष्करद्वीप to सवन .

अग्नीध्र had nine sons named नाभि , किम्पुरुष , हरिवर्ष , इलावृत , रम्य , हिरण्वान् , कुरु , भद्राश्व and केतुमाल . (Chapter 1, Aṃśa 2, Viṣṇu Purāṇa) .

प्रियव्रत once circled round मेरु in his chariot. As if competing with the Sun प्रियव्रत started his circling along with sunrise and ended it at sunset. He did so seven days making nights look like day and the sun appear dim and faded. The Sun was dejected and it was at the request of the त्रिमूर्तिस् that प्रियव्रत stopped his circumambulation. It was the path of प्रियव्रत 's circling for seven days that later became the seven oceans of पुराणिच् fame. (Yuddha Kāṇḍa, Kamba Rāmāyaṇa) .
