A sacred place situated at the meeting point of गङ्गा and यमुना . He who bathes at this holy spot would get the benefit of doing ten अश्वमेधस् . [mh-3-84-35 ] Mahābhārata • Vana parva .

It is believed that at प्रयाग there is the presence of ब्रह्मा , देवतास् , दिक्पालकस् ( guardians of the quarters ) , लोकपालकस् ( guardians of the world ) , साध्यस् ( realised souls ) , पितृस् ( manes ) , महर्षिस् like सनत्कुमार , अङ्गिरस् , ब्रह्मर्षिस् , नागस् , गरुड , सिद्धस् , सूर्यदेव and महाविष्णु . There are three fire-pits there. The river गङ्गा runs through the centre of these pits. The Centre of the confluence of गङ्गा and यमुना is believed to be the waist of the world. There is at प्रयाग the world-famous त्रिवेणी confluence. If one bathes at that place one gets the benefit of अश्वमेध and राजसूय together.

The greatness of प्रयाग is described thus: प्रयागतीर्थ , प्रतिष्ठानतीर्थ , कम्बलतीर्थ , अश्वतरतीर्थ , and भोगवतीतीर्थ are said to be the यागवेदीस् of प्रजापति . At such a प्रयाग Vedas and यज्ञस् live personified. If one praises it or chants its name in songs or smears the mud from it on one's body, one would be absolved of all sins. If one gives away anything in charity at this place or conducts श्राद्ध (ceremony of giving offerings to deceased relatives) or does pious mutterings one would get benefits of an imperishable nature. There are about seventy thousand तीर्थस् in this world, ten thousand of one kind and sixty thousand of another kind. प्रयाग has the presence of all these तीर्थस् and so it is considered as the best of all तीर्थस् . Here is the भोगवतीतीर्थ of वासुकि and the तीर्थ called हंसप्रपतन . If one bathes in the ponds there for three days together one would get the credit of giving as charity a crore of cows.
