पाञ्चालिक
[pancalika] IAST: PĀÑCĀLIKA
A यक्ष who was a son of कुबेर . In some parts of भारत this यक्ष is worshipped as a deity. It is believed that शिव had given पाञ्चालीक a boon that he who worships him whether he be man or woman, young or old, would become intoxicated with vigour. There is a story behind पाञ्चालिक obtaining this boon:
When सती who was insulted at the दक्षयाग was cousumed by fire a bereaved शिव sat inactive and moody at a lonely place. When this continued for a long time कामदेव (god of love) at the request of the other देवस् sent arrows against him and made him lustful. शिव then started running passionately calling the name of his wife and finding her nowhere jumped into the river कालिन्दी to commit suicide. (The waters of कालिन्दी became black from that time onwards). कालिन्दी was unable to bear the burden of the soul of शिव and so he had to get out to the shore and run again. At this time कामदेव sent another arrow, उन्मादास्त्र (arrow of intoxication) also against शिव . शिव could not bear the impact of the two arrows together and he laboured under great strain. Just then he saw पाञ्चालिक son of कुबेर coming that way. शिव then made him understand his difficulties and requested him to take charge of the force of the arrows from him. पाञ्चालिक did so and saved शिव from his toil. Pleased at this शिव blessed him. He said that पाञ्चालिक will be worshipped by people in the month of चैत्र and all those who do so will be invigorated. He added that henceforth he would be known as पाञ्चालिकेश also.
