The पुराणिच् version of the origin of birds is given below:

Descending in order from विष्णु came ब्रह्मा -- मरीचि - कश्यपप्रजापति . The latter got of his wife ताम्रा (daughter of दक्ष ) five daughters named क्रौञ्ची , भासी , श्येनी , धृतराष्ट्री and शुकी . From क्रौञ्ची were born the उलूकस् , भासी gave birth to भासस् , श्येनी to vultures and धृतराष्ट्री to swans and geese. From these originated the entire bird family of the world.
