I. A prominent नाग born to कश्यप प्रजापति of कद्रू . [mh-1-35-7 ] .
General
A King born in the हेहय dynasty. His was a rebirth of the asura called क्रोधवश . नील was called दुर्योधन also. माहिष्मती was the capital of his kingdom. He attended the स्वयंवर of द्रौपदी . [mh-1-67-61 ] .
Other Information
Once he fought a fierce battle with सहदेव , but ultimately yielded to the latter at the instance of अग्निदेव . (See under Agni, Para 8)
He gave his daughter सुदर्शना in marriage to अग्निदेव . (See under Agni, Para 8) .
During his triumphal tour, कर्ण defeated नील . [mh-3-254-15 ] .
In the battle of कुरुक्षेत्र he fought on the side of the कौरवस् . [mh-5-19-23 ] .
He was reckoned as one of the महारथिस् on the side of दुर्योधन . [mh-5-164-4 ] .
सुदर्शना was a daughter born to him of his wife नर्मदा . [mh-13-2-1 ] .
A monkey-chief, who was a dependant of श्री राम . He was अग्नि 's son. ' नील , son of पावक (fire) shone forth like अग्नि (fire). He stood foremost among the monkeys in the matter of effulgence, reputation and prowess'. (Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Bālakāṇḍa, Canto 17) .
This monkey-chief was also included in the set of monkeys deputed by श्री राम to search for सीता . In the राम-रावण war नील killed प्रमाथी , the younger brother of the राक्षस called दूषण . [mh-3-287-27 ] .
A warrior who fought on the पाण्डव side. He was king of अनूपदेश . He fought against दुर्जय and अश्वत्थामा and was killed by अश्वत्थामा . [mh-7-31-25 ] .
A famous king in nothern पाञ्चाल . The पुराण s refer to sixteen famous kings of this royal dynasty from नील to पृषत .
