निक्षुभा
[niksubha] IAST: NIKṢUBHĀ
An अप्सरा woman about whom the following story occurs in the ब्रह्मपर्व of the भविष्य पुराण . On account of the curse of सूर्य , निक्षुभा , the great beauty in स्वर्लोक , was born on earth as daughter of सुजिह्व a ब्रह्मिन् of मिहिर गोत्र . At the instance of her father, she used to keep the यज्ञ fire ever burning. One day the fire held in her hands abruptly burst into flames, and her unique beauty revealed in the light kindled the passion of सूर्य .
Next day सूर्य went to सुजिह्व and told him that his daughter, निक्षुभा was carrying since he had married her. As soon as he heard सूर्य 's words सुजिह्व cursed his daughter thus: "Since the child in your womb is enveloped by fire the child born to you will be despised and rejected by people."
Then सूर्य went to निक्षुभा and told her that though her child might be despised he would be a scholar, very well-bred and eligible for the worship of अग्नि .
As years passed many children were born to her by सूर्य . While she was living in the शाक island साम्ब , the son of कृष्ण , deputed her sons to perform rites in the सूर्य temple at साम्बपुर . निक्षुभा 's sons were married to girls born in the Bhoja family.
